They worshipped idols, though the Lord had said, ‘You shall not do this.’


But may the Lord forgive your servant for this one thing: when my master enters the temple of Rimmon to bow down and he is leaning on my arm and I have to bow there also – when I bow down in the temple of Rimmon, may the Lord forgive your servant for this.’


‘But if you turn away and forsake the decrees and commands I have given you and go off to serve other gods and worship them,


Those who run after other gods will suffer more and more. I will not pour out libations of blood to such gods or take up their names on my lips.


You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,


‘Be careful to do everything I have said to you. Do not invoke the names of other gods; do not let them be heard on your lips.


Do not let them live in your land or they will cause you to sin against me, because the worship of their gods will certainly be a snare to you.’


Do not set foot on the path of the wicked or walk in the way of evildoers.


And if they learn well the ways of my people and swear by my name, saying, “As surely as the Lord lives” – even as they once taught my people to swear by Baal – then they will be established among my people.


‘Why should I forgive you? Your children have forsaken me and sworn by gods that are not gods. I supplied all their needs, yet they committed adultery and thronged to the houses of prostitutes.
