When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth.’


The waters of Nimrim are dried up and the grass is withered; the vegetation is gone and nothing green is left.


In the streets they cry out for wine; all joy turns to gloom, all joyful sounds are banished from the earth.


The new wine dries up and the vine withers; all the merrymakers groan.


It will be made a wasteland, parched and desolate before me; the whole land will be laid waste because there is no-one who cares.


How long will the land lie parched and the grass in every field be withered? Because those who live in it are wicked, the animals and birds have perished. Moreover, the people are saying, ‘He will not see what happens to us.’


Joy and gladness are gone from the orchards and fields of Moab. I have stopped the flow of wine from the presses; no-one treads them with shouts of joy. Although there are shouts, they are not shouts of joy.


Because of this the land dries up, and all who live in it waste away; the beasts of the field, the birds in the sky and the fish in the sea are swept away.


Threshing-floors and winepresses will not feed the people; the new wine will fail them.


The vine is dried up and the fig-tree is withered; the pomegranate, the palm and the apple tree – all the trees of the field – are dried up. Surely the people’s joy is withered away.


Wake up, you drunkards, and weep! Wail, all you drinkers of wine; wail because of the new wine, for it has been snatched from your lips.


The Lord replied to them: ‘I am sending you grain, new wine and olive oil, enough to satisfy you fully; never again will I make you an object of scorn to the nations.


Your strength will be spent in vain, because your soil will not yield its crops, nor will the trees of your land yield their fruit.


Though the fig-tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the sheepfold and no cattle in the stalls,


I called for a drought on the fields and the mountains, on the grain, the new wine, the olive oil and everything else the ground produces, on people and livestock, and on all the labour of your hands.’


‘Because of you I will rebuke your descendants; I will smear on your faces the dung from your festival sacrifices, and you will be carried off with it.
