6 During the reign of King Josiah, the Lord said to me, ‘Have you seen what faithless Israel has done? She has gone up on every high hill and under every spreading tree and has committed adultery there.

They also set up for themselves high places, sacred stones and Asherah poles on every high hill and under every spreading tree.


Josiah was eight years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem for thirty-one years.


They defiled themselves by what they did; by their deeds they prostituted themselves.


‘But you – come here, you children of a sorceress, you offspring of adulterers and prostitutes!


You have made your bed on a high and lofty hill; there you went up to offer your sacrifices.


The word of the Lord came to him in the thirteenth year of the reign of Josiah son of Amon king of Judah,


They have returned to the sins of their ancestors, who refused to listen to my words. They have followed other gods to serve them. Both Israel and Judah have broken the covenant I made with their ancestors.


Even their children remember their altars and Asherah poles beside the spreading trees and on the high hills.


I gave faithless Israel her certificate of divorce and sent her away because of all her adulteries. Yet I saw that her unfaithful sister Judah had no fear; she also went out and committed adultery.


How long will you wander, unfaithful Daughter Israel? The Lord will create a new thing on earth – the woman will return to the man.’


The people of Israel and the people of Judah have been utterly unfaithful to me,’ declares the Lord.


But they did not listen or pay attention; instead, they followed the stubborn inclinations of their evil hearts. They went backwards and not forwards.


When you built your mounds at every street corner and made your lofty shrines in every public square, you were unlike a prostitute, because you scorned payment.


‘ “Therefore, you prostitute, hear the word of the Lord!


when I brought them into the land I had sworn to give them and they saw any high hill or any leafy tree, there they offered their sacrifices, made offerings that aroused my anger, presented their fragrant incense and poured out their drink offerings.


‘Her sister Oholibah saw this, yet in her lust and prostitution she was more depraved than her sister.


The elder one was named Oholah, and her sister was Oholibah. They were mine and gave birth to sons and daughters. Oholah is Samaria, and Oholibah is Jerusalem.


My people are determined to turn from me. Even though they call me God Most High, I will by no means exalt them.


They sacrifice on the mountaintops and burn offerings on the hills, under oak, poplar and terebinth, where the shade is pleasant. Therefore your daughters turn to prostitution and your daughters-in-law to adultery.


Yet they would not listen to their judges but prostituted themselves to other gods and worshipped them. They quickly turned from the ways of their ancestors, who had been obedient to the Lord’s commands.
