Then Abraham approached him and said: ‘Will you sweep away the righteous with the wicked?


‘And you, my son Solomon, acknowledge the God of your father, and serve him with wholehearted devotion and with a willing mind, for the Lord searches every heart and understands every desire and every thought. If you seek him, he will be found by you; but if you forsake him, he will reject you for ever.


He went out to meet Asa and said to him, ‘Listen to me, Asa and all Judah and Benjamin. The Lord is with you when you are with him. If you seek him, he will be found by you, but if you forsake him, he will forsake you.


yet my hands have been free of violence and my prayer is pure.


Nevertheless, the righteous will hold to their ways, and those with clean hands will grow stronger.


Even if I washed myself with soap and my hands with cleansing powder,


I hate double-minded people, but I love your law.


The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.


The Lord has dealt with me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands he has rewarded me.


The one who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not trust in an idol or swear by a false god.


I wash my hands in innocence, and go about your altar, Lord,


Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.


Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure and have washed my hands in innocence.


But as for me, it is good to be near God. I have made the Sovereign Lord my refuge; I will tell of all your deeds.


Whoever is captured will be thrust through; all who are caught will fall by the sword.


The Lord says: ‘These people come near to me with their mouth and honour me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship of me is based on merely human rules they have been taught.


For day after day they seek me out; they seem eager to know my ways, as if they were a nation that does what is right and has not forsaken the commands of its God. They ask me for just decisions and seem eager for God to come near them.


At that time this people and Jerusalem will be told, ‘A scorching wind from the barren heights in the desert blows towards my people, but not to winnow or cleanse;


Jerusalem, wash the evil from your heart and be saved. How long will you harbour wicked thoughts?


You came near when I called you, and you said, ‘Do not fear.’


Rid yourselves of all the offences you have committed, and get a new heart and a new spirit. Why will you die, people of Israel?


Therefore tell the people: this is what the Lord Almighty says: “Return to me,” declares the Lord Almighty, “and I will return to you,” says the Lord Almighty.


Ever since the time of your ancestors you have turned away from my decrees and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you,’ says the Lord Almighty. ‘But you ask, “How are we to return?”


‘Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognised by its fruit.


‘Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They don’t wash their hands before they eat!’


When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. ‘I am innocent of this man’s blood,’ he said. ‘It is your responsibility!’


He did not discriminate between us and them, for he purified their hearts by faith.


Therefore, since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.


Therefore I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or disputing.


let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.


(for the law made nothing perfect), and a better hope is introduced, by which we draw near to God.


Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.


But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.


Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for each other, love one another deeply, from the heart.


and this water symbolises baptism that now saves you also – not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear conscience towards God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ,


All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.


Then Saul built an altar to the Lord; it was the first time he had done this.
