for before the boy knows enough to reject the wrong and choose the right, the land of the two kings you dread will be laid waste.


The Lord will bring on you and on your people and on the house of your father a time unlike any since Ephraim broke away from Judah – he will bring the king of Assyria.’


Aram, Ephraim and Remaliah’s son have plotted your ruin, saying,


When the Lord began to speak through Hosea, the Lord said to him, ‘Go, marry a promiscuous woman and have children with her, for like an adulterous wife this land is guilty of unfaithfulness to the Lord.’


Ephraim feeds on the wind; he pursues the east wind all day and multiplies lies and violence. He makes a treaty with Assyria and sends olive oil to Egypt.


When Ephraim spoke, people trembled; he was exalted in Israel. But he became guilty of Baal worship and died.


I cared for you in the wilderness, in the land of burning heat.


Ephraim is oppressed, trampled in judgment, intent on pursuing idols.


‘When Ephraim saw his sickness, and Judah his sores, then Ephraim turned to Assyria, and sent to the great king for help. But he is not able to cure you, not able to heal your sores.


Ephraim will be laid waste on the day of reckoning. Among the tribes of Israel I proclaim what is certain.


I have seen a horrible thing in Israel: there Ephraim is given to prostitution, Israel is defiled.


‘What can I do with you, Ephraim? What can I do with you, Judah? Your love is like the morning mist, like the early dew that disappears.


‘Though Ephraim built many altars for sin offerings, these have become altars for sinning.


‘You only have I chosen of all the families of the earth; therefore I will punish you for all your sins.’


For I know how many are your offences and how great your sins. There are those who oppress the innocent and take bribes and deprive the poor of justice in the courts.


In majesty he is like a firstborn bull; his horns are the horns of a wild ox. With them he will gore the nations, even those at the ends of the earth. Such are the ten thousands of Ephraim; such are the thousands of Manasseh.’


Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.


I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other!
