Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence; I will be a restless wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.’


Reuben replied, ‘Didn’t I tell you not to sin against the boy? But you wouldn’t listen! Now we must give an accounting for his blood.’


This is the written account of Adam’s family line. When God created mankind, he made them in the likeness of God.


How much more – when wicked men have killed an innocent man in his own house and on his own bed – should I not now demand his blood from your hand and rid the earth of you!’


But now, do not consider him innocent. You are a man of wisdom; you will know what to do to him. Bring his grey head down to the grave in blood.’


When Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she proceeded to destroy the whole royal family.


So they seized her as she reached the place where the horses enter the palace grounds, and there she was put to death.

‘ “Do not pollute the land where you are. Bloodshed pollutes the land, and atonement cannot be made for the land on which blood has been shed, except by the blood of the one who shed it.


‘Put your sword back in its place,’ Jesus said to him, ‘for all who draw the sword will die by the sword.


For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.


A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man.


But if out of hate someone lies in wait, assaults and kills a neighbour, and then flees to one of these cities,


With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness.


‘If anyone is to go into captivity, into captivity they will go. If anyone is to be killed with the sword, with the sword they will be killed.’ This calls for patient endurance and faithfulness on the part of God’s people.


Thus God repaid the wickedness that Abimelek had done to his father by murdering his seventy brothers.


But Samuel said, ‘As your sword has made women childless, so will your mother be childless among women.’ And Samuel put Agag to death before the Lord at Gilgal.
