And be sure to say, “Your servant Jacob is coming behind us.” ’ For he thought, ‘I will pacify him with these gifts I am sending on ahead; later, when I see him, perhaps he will receive me.’


That night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two female servants and his eleven sons and crossed the ford of the Jabbok.


Please accept the present that was brought to you, for God has been gracious to me and I have all I need.’ And because Jacob insisted, Esau accepted it.


Then their father Israel said to them, ‘If it must be, then do this: put some of the best products of the land in your bags and take them down to the man as a gift – a little balm and a little honey, some spices and myrrh, some pistachio nuts and almonds.


A bribe is seen as a charm by the one who gives it; they think success will come at every turn.


Then Joshua sent them off, and they went to the place of ambush and lay in wait between Bethel and Ai, to the west of Ai – but Joshua spent that night with the people.


Then she told her servants, ‘Go on ahead; I’ll follow you.’ But she did not tell her husband Nabal.
