You will be released from my oath if, when you go to my clan, they refuse to give her to you – then you will be released from my oath.”


But if her father forbids her when he hears about it, none of her vows or the pledges by which she bound herself will stand; the Lord will release her because her father has forbidden her.


But if her husband forbids her when he hears about it, he nullifies the vow that binds her or the rash promise by which she binds herself, and the Lord will release her.


Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’


To this he replied: ‘Brothers and fathers, listen to me! The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham while he was still in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Harran.


This is what we will do to them: we will let them live, so that God’s wrath will not fall on us for breaking the oath we swore to them.’
