In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.


God called the dry ground ‘land’, and the gathered waters he called ‘seas’. And God saw that it was good.


This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, when the Lord God made the earth and the heavens.


And Hezekiah prayed to the Lord: ‘Lord, the God of Israel, enthroned between the cherubim, you alone are God over all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth.


And Hiram added: ‘Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, who made heaven and earth! He has given King David a wise son, endowed with intelligence and discernment, who will build a temple for the Lord and a palace for himself.


You alone are the Lord. You made the heavens, even the highest heavens, and all their starry host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them. You give life to everything, and the multitudes of heaven worship you.


Which of all these does not know that the hand of the Lord has done this?


The Lord wraps himself in light as with a garment; he stretches out the heavens like a tent


He is the Maker of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them – he remains faithful for ever.


By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth.


For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm.


For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.


It will be a sign between me and the Israelites for ever, for in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day he rested and was refreshed.” ’


All the stars in the sky will be dissolved and the heavens rolled up like a scroll; all the starry host will fall like withered leaves from the vine, like shrivelled figs from the fig-tree.


This is what God the Lord says – the Creator of the heavens, who stretches them out, who spreads out the earth with all that springs from it, who gives breath to its people, and life to those who walk on it:


It is I who made the earth and created mankind on it. My own hands stretched out the heavens; I marshalled their starry hosts.


For this is what the Lord says – he who created the heavens, he is God; he who fashioned and made the earth, he founded it; he did not create it to be empty, but formed it to be inhabited – he says: ‘I am the Lord, and there is no other.


My own hand laid the foundations of the earth, and my right hand spread out the heavens; when I summon them, they all stand up together.


‘As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.


‘See, I will create new heavens and a new earth. The former things will not be remembered, nor will they come to mind.


But God made the earth by his power; he founded the world by his wisdom and stretched out the heavens by his understanding.


He who is the Portion of Jacob is not like these, for he is the Maker of all things, including Israel, the people of his inheritance – the Lord Almighty is his name.


They will be exposed to the sun and the moon and all the stars of the heavens, which they have loved and served and which they have followed and consulted and worshipped. They will not be gathered up or buried, but will be like dung lying on the ground.


A prophecy: the word of the Lord concerning Israel. The Lord, who stretches out the heavens, who lays the foundation of the earth, and who forms the human spirit within a person, declares:


Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,


When they heard this, they raised their voices together in prayer to God. ‘Sovereign Lord,’ they said, ‘you made the heavens and the earth and the sea, and everything in them.


But God turned away from them and gave them over to the worship of the sun, moon and stars. This agrees with what is written in the book of the prophets: ‘ “Did you bring me sacrifices and offerings for forty years in the wilderness, people of Israel?


and contrary to my command has worshipped other gods, bowing down to them or to the sun or the moon or the stars in the sky,


And when you look up to the sky and see the sun, the moon and the stars – all the heavenly array – do not be enticed into bowing down to them and worshipping things the Lord your God has apportioned to all the nations under heaven.


Now we who have believed enter that rest, just as God has said, ‘So I declared on oath in my anger, “They shall never enter my rest.” ’ And yet his works have been finished since the creation of the world.
