And God said, ‘Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years,


And God said, ‘Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the vault of the sky.’


By his breath the skies became fair; his hand pierced the gliding serpent.


He loads the clouds with moisture; he scatters his lightning through them.


can you join him in spreading out the skies, hard as a mirror of cast bronze?


The Lord wraps himself in light as with a garment; he stretches out the heavens like a tent


Praise him, you highest heavens and you waters above the skies.


Praise the Lord. Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens.


The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.


Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge.


By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth.


For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm.


If clouds are full of water, they pour rain on the earth. Whether a tree falls to the south or to the north, in the place where it falls, there it will lie.


He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers. He stretches out the heavens like a canopy, and spreads them out like a tent to live in.


But the Lord is the true God; he is the living God, the eternal King. When he is angry, the earth trembles; the nations cannot endure his wrath.


‘He made the earth by his power; he founded the world by his wisdom and stretched out the heavens by his understanding.


A prophecy: the word of the Lord concerning Israel. The Lord, who stretches out the heavens, who lays the foundation of the earth, and who forms the human spirit within a person, declares:


But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens came into being and the earth was formed out of water and by water.
