4 Didn’t it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn’t the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied just to human beings but to God.’

I know, my God, that you test the heart and are pleased with integrity. All these things I have given willingly and with honest intent. And now I have seen with joy how willingly your people who are here have given to you.


Besides, in my devotion to the temple of my God I now give my personal treasures of gold and silver for the temple of my God, over and above everything I have provided for this holy temple:


for the gold work and the silver work, and for all the work to be done by the craftsmen. Now, who is willing to consecrate themselves to the Lord today?’


The people rejoiced at the willing response of their leaders, for they had given freely and wholeheartedly to the Lord. David the king also rejoiced greatly.


They conceive trouble and give birth to evil; their womb fashions deceit.’


Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely.


Whoever is pregnant with evil conceives trouble and gives birth to disillusionment.


Moses also said, ‘You will know that it was the Lord when he gives you meat to eat in the evening and all the bread you want in the morning, because he has heard your grumbling against him. Who are we? You are not grumbling against us, but against the Lord.’


All the Israelite men and women who were willing brought to the Lord freewill offerings for all the work the Lord through Moses had commanded them to do.


It is better not to make a vow than to make one and not fulfil it.


No-one calls for justice; no-one pleads a case with integrity. They rely on empty arguments, they utter lies; they conceive trouble and give birth to evil.


‘ “This is what the Sovereign Lord says: on that day thoughts will come into your mind and you will devise an evil scheme.


It is against the Lord that you and all your followers have banded together. Who is Aaron that you should grumble against him?’


‘Whoever listens to you listens to me; whoever rejects you rejects me; but whoever rejects me rejects him who sent me.’


Then Peter said, ‘Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land?


Peter said to her, ‘How could you conspire to test the Spirit of the Lord? Listen! The feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out also.’


But food does not bring us near to God; we are no worse if we do not eat, and no better if we do.


Therefore, anyone who rejects this instruction does not reject a human being but God, the very God who gives you his Holy Spirit.


But I did not want to do anything without your consent, so that any favour you do would not seem forced but would be voluntary.


Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.


And the Lord told him: ‘Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king.
