He turned round, looked at them and called down a curse on them in the name of the Lord. Then two bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the boys.


David was afraid of God that day and asked, ‘How can I ever bring the ark of God to me?’


It was because you, the Levites, did not bring it up the first time that the Lord our God broke out in anger against us. We did not enquire of him about how to do it in the prescribed way.’


My flesh trembles in fear of you; I stand in awe of your laws.


All people will fear; they will proclaim the works of God and ponder what he has done.


Therefore this is what the Lord God Almighty says: ‘Because the people have spoken these words, I will make my words in your mouth a fire and these people the wood it consumes.


Now as I was prophesying, Pelatiah son of Benaiah died. Then I fell face down and cried out in a loud voice, ‘Alas, Sovereign Lord! Will you completely destroy the remnant of Israel?’


Moses then said to Aaron, ‘This is what the Lord spoke of when he said: ‘ “Among those who approach me I will be proved holy; in the sight of all the people I will be honoured.” ’ Aaron remained silent.


Now the hand of the Lord is against you. You are going to be blind for a time, not even able to see the light of the sun.’ Immediately mist and darkness came over him, and he groped about, seeking someone to lead him by the hand.


Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles.


No-one else dared join them, even though they were highly regarded by the people.


What do you prefer? Shall I come to you with a rod of discipline, or shall I come in love and with a gentle spirit?


This is why I write these things when I am absent, that when I come I may not have to be harsh in my use of authority – the authority the Lord gave me for building you up, not for tearing you down.


I already gave you a warning when I was with you the second time. I now repeat it while absent: on my return I will not spare those who sinned earlier or any of the others,


See what this godly sorrow has produced in you: what earnestness, what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what alarm, what longing, what concern, what readiness to see justice done. At every point you have proved yourselves to be innocent in this matter.


Then all Israel will hear and be afraid, and no-one among you will do such an evil thing again.


Then all the men of his town are to stone him to death. You must purge the evil from among you. All Israel will hear of it and be afraid.


When Achan son of Zerah was unfaithful in regard to the devoted things, did not wrath come on the whole community of Israel? He was not the only one who died for his sin.” ’


At that very hour there was a severe earthquake and a tenth of the city collapsed. Seven thousand people were killed in the earthquake, and the survivors were terrified and gave glory to the God of heaven.


If anyone tries to harm them, fire comes from their mouths and devours their enemies. This is how anyone who wants to harm them must die.
