The sceptre will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until he to whom it belongs shall come and the obedience of the nations shall be his.


‘He gives his king great victories; he shows unfailing kindness to his anointed, to David and his descendants for ever.’


Your house and your kingdom shall endure for ever before me; your throne shall be established for ever.” ’


‘Lord Almighty, God of Israel, you have revealed this to your servant, saying, “I will build a house for you.” So your servant has found courage to pray this prayer to you.


And now, as surely as the Lord lives – he who has established me securely on the throne of my father David and has founded a dynasty for me as he promised – Adonijah shall be put to death today!’


and that the Lord may keep his promise to me: “If your descendants watch how they live, and if they walk faithfully before me with all their heart and soul, you will never fail to have a successor on the throne of Israel.”


But King Solomon will be blessed, and David’s throne will remain secure before the Lord for ever.’


I intend, therefore, to build a temple for the Name of the Lord my God, as the Lord told my father David, when he said, “Your son whom I will put on the throne in your place will build the temple for my Name.”


‘As for this temple you are building, if you follow my decrees, observe my laws and keep all my commands and obey them, I will fulfil through you the promise I gave to David your father.


I have indeed built a magnificent temple for you, a place for you to dwell for ever.’


Then he said: ‘Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, who with his own hand has fulfilled what he promised with his own mouth to my father David. For he said,


Nevertheless, you are not the one to build the temple, but your son, your own flesh and blood – he is the one who will build the temple for my Name.”


He built altars in the temple of the Lord, of which the Lord had said, ‘In Jerusalem I will put my Name.’


He took the carved Asherah pole he had made and put it in the temple, of which the Lord had said to David and to his son Solomon, ‘In this temple and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, I will put my Name for ever.


Nevertheless, for the sake of his servant David, the Lord was not willing to destroy Judah. He had promised to maintain a lamp for David and his descendants for ever.


Consider now, for the Lord has chosen you to build a house as the sanctuary. Be strong and do the work.’


He built altars in the temple of the Lord, of which the Lord had said, ‘My Name will remain in Jerusalem for ever.’


‘Now, Lord, the God of Israel, keep for your servant David my father the promises you made to him when you said, “You shall never fail to have a successor to sit before me on the throne of Israel, if only your descendants are careful in all they do to walk before me according to my law, as you have done.”


He does not take his eyes off the righteous; he enthrones them with kings and exalts them for ever.


May his name endure for ever; may it continue as long as the sun. Then all nations will be blessed through him, and they will call him blessed.


My hand will sustain him; surely my arm will strengthen him.


I will establish his line for ever, his throne as long as the heavens endure.


“I will establish your line for ever and make your throne firm through all generations.” ’


This is what the Lord says: ‘In the time of my favour I will answer you, and in the day of salvation I will help you; I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people, to restore the land and to reassign its desolate inheritances,


For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.


Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and for ever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.


For this is what the Lord says: “David will never fail to have a man to sit on the throne of Israel,


They will live in the land I gave to my servant Jacob, the land where your ancestors lived. They and their children and their children’s children will live there for ever, and David my servant will be their prince for ever.


‘In the time of those kings, the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed, nor will it be left to another people. It will crush all those kingdoms and bring them to an end, but it will itself endure for ever.


Tell him this is what the Lord Almighty says: “Here is the man whose name is the Branch, and he will branch out from his place and build the temple of the Lord.


It is he who will build the temple of the Lord, and he will be clothed with majesty and will sit and rule on his throne. And he will be a priest on his throne. And there will be harmony between the two.”


And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.


Jesus has been found worthy of greater honour than Moses, just as the builder of a house has greater honour than the house itself.


you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
