21 ‘Mountains of Gilboa, may you have neither dew nor rain, may no showers fall on your terraced fields. For there the shield of the mighty was despised, the shield of Saul – no longer rubbed with oil.

Now the Philistines fought against Israel; the Israelites fled before them, and many fell dead on Mount Gilboa.


The next day, when the Philistines came to strip the dead, they found Saul and his sons fallen on Mount Gilboa.


Your neck is like the tower of David, built with courses of stone; on it hang a thousand shields, all of them shields of warriors.


They set the tables, they spread the rugs, they eat, they drink! Get up, you officers, oil the shields!


I will make it a wasteland, neither pruned nor cultivated, and briers and thorns will grow there. I will command the clouds not to rain on it.’


‘ “This is what the Sovereign Lord says: on the day it was brought down to the realm of the dead I covered the deep springs with mourning for it; I held back its streams, and its abundant waters were restrained. Who knows? He may turn and relent and leave behind a blessing – grain offerings and drink offerings for the Lord your God.

Then Samuel took a flask of olive oil and poured it on Saul’s head and kissed him, saying, ‘Has not the Lord anointed you ruler over his inheritance?
