Now the Philistines fought against Israel; and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines; and fell down wounded in Mount Gelboe.


And the next day the Philistines, taking away the spoils of them that were slain, found Saul and his sons lying on mount Gelboe.


Thy neck, is as the tower of David, which is built with bulwarks: a thousand bucklers hang upon it, all the armour of valiant men.


Prepare the table: behold in the watch-tower them that eat and drink. Arise, ye princes, take up the shield.


And I will make it desolate. It shall not be pruned and it shall not be digged: but briers and thorns shall come up. And I will command the clouds to rain no rain upon it.


Thus saith the Lord God: In the day when he went down to hell, I brought in mourning, I covered him with the deep: and I withheld its rivers, and restrained the many waters: Libanus grieved for him, and all the trees of the field trembled.


Sacrifice and libation is cut off from the house of the Lord: the priests, the Lord's ministers, have mourned:


Who knoweth but he will return, and forgive, and leave a blessing behind him, sacrifice and libation to the Lord your God?


Curse ye the land of Meroz, said the angel of the Lord: curse the inhabitants thereof, because they came not to the help of the Lord, to help his most valiant men.


And Samuel took a little vial of oil; and poured it upon his head; and kissed him; and said: Behold, the Lord hath anointed thee to be prince over his inheritance: and thou shalt deliver his people out of the hands of their enemies, that are round about them. And this shall be a sign unto thee, that God hath anointed thee to be prince.


And the Philistines fought against Israel: and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain in mount Gelboe.


And on the morrow the Philistines came to strip the slain: and they found Saul and his three sons lying in mount Gelboe.
