if my steps have turned from the path, if my heart has been led by my eyes, or if my hands have been defiled,


‘If my heart has been enticed by a woman, or if I have lurked at my neighbour’s door,


She gives no thought to the way of life; her paths wander aimlessly, but she does not know it.


Do not lust in your heart after her beauty or let her captivate you with her eyes.


Wash and make yourselves clean. Take your evil deeds out of my sight; stop doing wrong.


My sword has drunk its fill in the heavens; see, it descends in judgment on Edom, the people I have totally destroyed.


‘Never again will there be in it an infant who lives but a few days, or an old man who does not live out his years; the one who dies at a hundred will be thought a mere child; the one who fails to reach a hundred will be considered accursed.


Can an Ethiopian change his skin or a leopard its spots? Neither can you do good who are accustomed to doing evil.

But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.


For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.


How can you believe since you accept glory from one another but do not seek the glory that comes from the only God?


For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive people.


No doubt there have to be differences among you to show which of you have God’s approval.


All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath.


Then we will no longer be infants, tossed to and fro by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming.


Do not let anyone who delights in false humility and the worship of angels disqualify you. Such a person also goes into great detail about what they have seen; they are puffed up with idle notions by their unspiritual mind.


Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.


For they mouth empty, boastful words and, by appealing to the lustful desires of the flesh, they entice people who are just escaping from those who live in error.


In their greed these teachers will exploit you with fabricated stories. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping.


He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction.


For everything in the world – the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life – comes not from the Father but from the world.


Woe to them! They have taken the way of Cain; they have rushed for profit into Balaam’s error; they have been destroyed in Korah’s rebellion.


The great dragon was hurled down – that ancient snake called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.
