Moses also said, ‘You will know that it was the Lord when he gives you meat to eat in the evening and all the bread you want in the morning, because he has heard your grumbling against him. Who are we? You are not grumbling against us, but against the Lord.’


so I also will choose harsh treatment for them and will bring on them what they dread. For when I called, no-one answered, when I spoke, no-one listened. They did evil in my sight and chose what displeases me.’


“Every seventh year each of you must free any fellow Hebrews who have sold themselves to you. After they have served you for six years, you must let them go free.” Your ancestors, however, did not listen to me or pay attention to me.


He said: ‘Son of man, I am sending you to the Israelites, to a rebellious nation that has rebelled against me; they and their ancestors have been in revolt against me to this very day.


But the people of Israel are not willing to listen to you because they are not willing to listen to me, for all the Israelites are hardened and obstinate.


That night God came to Balaam and said, ‘Since these men have come to summon you, go with them, but do only what I tell you.’


‘Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me.

Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.


But Gideon told them, ‘I will not rule over you, nor will my son rule over you. The Lord will rule over you.’


But you have now rejected your God, who saves you out of all your disasters and calamities. And you have said, “No, appoint a king over us.” So now present yourselves before the Lord by your tribes and clans.’


Samuel said to all Israel, ‘I have listened to everything you said to me and have set a king over you.


‘But when you saw that Nahash king of the Ammonites was moving against you, you said to me, “No, we want a king to rule over us” – even though the Lord your God was your king.


The Lord answered, ‘Listen to them and give them a king.’ Then Samuel said to the Israelites, ‘Everyone go back to your own town.’


As they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are doing to you.
