Now return the man’s wife, for he is a prophet, and he will pray for you and you will live. But if you do not return her, you may be sure that you and all who belong to you will die.’


It was also called Mizpah, because he said, ‘May the Lord keep watch between you and me when we are away from each other.


When all the army officers and their men heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah as governor, they came to Gedaliah at Mizpah – Ishmael son of Nethaniah, Johanan son of Kareah, Seraiah son of Tanhumeth the Netophathite, Jaazaniah the son of the Maakathite, and their men.


On the twenty-fourth day of the same month, the Israelites gathered together, fasting and wearing sackcloth and putting dust on their heads.


So Jeremiah went to Gedaliah son of Ahikam at Mizpah and stayed with him among the people who were left behind in the land.


‘Hear this, you priests! Pay attention, you Israelites! Listen, royal house! This judgment is against you: you have been a snare at Mizpah, a net spread out on Tabor.


Gather the people, consecrate the assembly; bring together the elders, gather the children, those nursing at the breast. Let the bridegroom leave his room and the bride her chamber.


When the Ammonites were called to arms and camped in Gilead, the Israelites assembled and camped at Mizpah.


Then all Israel from Dan to Beersheba and from the land of Gilead came together as one and assembled before the Lord in Mizpah.


Samuel summoned the people of Israel to the Lord at Mizpah


Is it not wheat harvest now? I will call on the Lord to send thunder and rain. And you will realise what an evil thing you did in the eyes of the Lord when you asked for a king.’


As for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord by failing to pray for you. And I will teach you the way that is good and right.


Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer, saying, ‘Thus far the Lord has helped us.’


From year to year he went on a circuit from Bethel to Gilgal to Mizpah, judging Israel in all those places.


So the Israelites put away their Baals and Ashtoreths, and served the Lord only.


But when they said, ‘Give us a king to lead us,’ this displeased Samuel; so he prayed to the Lord.
