4 The woman was dressed in purple and red. She was shining with the gold, jewels, and pearls she was wearing. She had a golden cup in her hand. This cup was filled with terrible (evil) things and the uncleanness of her sexual sin.

There were men who served other gods by selling their bodies for sex. [178] So the people of Judah did many bad things. The people that had lived in the land before them did those same evil things. And God took the land away from those people and gave it to the people of Israel.


Manasseh did the things that the Lord said were wrong. Manasseh did the terrible things the other nations did. (And the Lord forced those nations to leave their country when the Israelites came.)


God, you used your servants, the prophets, and gave those commands to us. You said: “The land you are going to live in and own is a ruined land. It has been ruined by the very bad things the people living there have done. Those people have done very bad things in every place in this land. They have made this land dirty with their sins.


Some people kill bulls \{as a sacrifice\},\par but they also beat people.\par Those people kill sheep as a sacrifice,\par but they also break the necks of dogs!\par Those people offer up grain offerings,\par but they also offer the blood of pigs! {\cf2\super [475]} \par Those people burn incense, {\cf2\super [476]} \par but they also love their worthless idols. {\cf2\super [477]} \par Those people choose their own ways.\par And they also love their terrible idols.\par


Babylon was like a golden cup\par in the Lord’s hand.\par Babylon made the whole world drunk.\par The nations drank Babylon’s wine.\par So they went crazy.\par


Jerusalem’s skirts became dirty.\par She didn’t think about the things\par that would happen to her.\par Her fall was amazing.\par She had no person to comfort her.\par She says,\par “Lord, see how I am hurt!\par See how my enemy thinks he is so great!”\par


\{God said,\} “\{The people of Israel did all those bad things.\} So speak to the family of Israel. Tell them, ‘The Lord my Master says these things: You people have made yourselves filthy by doing the things your ancestors {\cf2\super [147]} did. You have acted like a prostitute. {\cf2\super [148]} You have left me to be with the horrible gods your ancestors worshiped.


Then let the pot stand empty\par on the coals.\par Let it become so hot that its stains {\cf2\super [204]} \par begin to glow.\par Those stains will be melted away.\par The rust will be destroyed.\par


“‘You sinned against me\par and became stained with sin.\par I wanted to wash you and make you clean.\par But the stains would not come out.\par I won’t try washing you again\par until my hot anger is finished with you!\par


You were in Eden,\par the Garden of God.\par You had every precious stone—\par rubies, topaz, and diamonds;\par beryls, onyx, and jasper;\par sapphires, turquoise, and emeralds.\par And each of these stones was set in gold.\par You were given this beauty\par on the day you were created.\par \{God\} made you strong.\par


Then I will sprinkle pure water on you and make you pure. I will wash away all your filth. I will wash away the filth from those nasty idols and make you pure.”


The northern king will not worship any god, but he will worship power. Power and strength will be his god. His fathers didn’t love power like he does. He honors the god of power with gold and silver, expensive jewels, and gifts.


At the time I found Israel, they were like fresh grapes in the desert. They were like the first figs on a fig tree at the beginning of the season. But then they came to Baal-Peor. {\cf2\super [92]} And they changed—and I had to cut them off \{(destroy them) like rotten fruit. {\cf2\super [93]} They became like the terrible things \{(false gods) that they loved.


You saw their hated things—the idols [191] they had made from wood, stone, silver, and gold.


Then the second angel followed the first angel and said, “She is destroyed! The great city of Babylon is destroyed! She (Babylon) made all the nations drink the wine of her adultery {\cf2\super [101]} and of God’s anger.”


They sell gold, silver, jewels, pearls, fine linen cloth, purple cloth, silk, and scarlet cloth, all kinds of citron wood, and all kinds of things made from ivory, expensive wood, bronze, iron, and marble.


His judgments are true and right.\par Our God has punished the prostitute. {\cf2\super [144]} \par She is the one who made the earth evil\par with her sexual sin.\par God has punished the prostitute\par to pay her for the blood (death)\par of his servants.”\par


The twelve gates were twelve pearls. Each gate was made from one pearl. The street of the city was made of pure gold. The gold was clear like glass.


These people did not change their hearts and lives and turn away from killing other people. They did not turn away from their evil magic, their sexual sins, and their stealing.
