I pray that we will turn to him and follow him. Then we will obey all the laws, decisions, and commands that he gave our ancestors.


Also, in Judah God’s power united the people so that they would obey the king and his officials. In this way they obeyed the word of the Lord.


During the first year {\cf2\super [1]} that Cyrus was king of Persia, the Lord encouraged Cyrus to make an announcement. Cyrus put that announcement in writing and had it read every place in his kingdom. This happened so that the Lord’s message that was spoken through Jeremiah {\cf2\super [2]} would truly happen. This is the announcement:


So the family leaders from the family groups of Judah and Benjamin prepared to go up to Jerusalem. They were going to Jerusalem to build the Lord’s temple. Also, every person that God had encouraged got ready to go to Jerusalem.


{\cf2\super [52]} Blessed is the Lord,\par the God of our ancestors.\par God put the idea into the king’s heart\par to honor the Lord’s temple in Jerusalem.\par


Then the king said to me, “What do you want me to do?”


“God does all these things\par again and again for that person.\par


Your people will volunteer\par when you gather your army together.\par They will wear their special clothes\par and meet together early in the morning,\par Those young men will be\par \{all around you\} like dew on the ground. {\cf2\super [574]} \par


Help me think about your Agreement {\cf2\super [590]} \par instead of how to get rich.\par


Don’t let me want to do bad things.\par Stop me from joining bad people\par when they do wrong.\par Don’t let me share the things\par those bad people enjoy doing.\par


\{Farmers dig small ditches to water their fields. They change where the water goes by closing different ditches.\} The Lord controls a king’s mind just like that. The Lord can lead the king wherever he wants him to go.


Lord, you have succeeded in doing\par all the things that we tried to do.\par So give us peace.\par


“In the future, I will make this Agreement {\cf2\super [261]} with the people of Israel.” This message is from the Lord. “I will put my teachings in their minds, and I will write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.


The people of Israel and Judah will be my people. And I will be their God.


“Don’t fear, little flock (group). Your Father (God) wants to give you the kingdom.


“Praise God in heaven,\par and on earth let there be peace\par to the people that please God.”\par


John answered, “A man can get only what God gives him.


It is written in the prophets {\cf2\super [91]} : ‘God will teach all the people.’ {\cf2\super [92]} People listen to the Father and learn from him. Those people come to me.


Jesus said, “That is why I said, ‘If the Father does not let a person come to me, then that person cannot come.’”


The Lord was helping the believers. And a large group of people believed and started following the Lord (Jesus).


God has given me a special gift. That is why I have something to say to every person among you. Don’t think that you are better than you really are. You must see yourself like you really are. Decide what you are by the kind of faith God has given you.


So God will choose the person he decides to show mercy to. And his choice does not depend on what people want or try to do.


And there are different ways that God works in people; but \{all these ways are from\} the same God. God works in us all to do everything.


But, because of God’s grace (gift), that is what I am. And his grace that he gave me was not wasted. I worked harder than all the other apostles. (But I was not really the one working. It was God’s grace that was with me.)


I don’t mean that we are able to say that we can do anything \{good\} ourselves. It is God who makes us able to do all that we do.


In Christ we were chosen \{to be God’s people\}. God had already planned for us to be his people, because that is what God wanted. And God is the One who makes everything agree with what he decides and wants.


And before the world was made, God decided to make us his own children through Jesus Christ. That was what God wanted to do. That pleased him.


let us know his secret plan. This was what God wanted. And he planned to do it through Christ.


I mean that you are saved by grace. And you got that grace by believing. You did not save yourselves. It was a gift from God.


That is why we always pray for you. We ask our God to help you live the good way that he called you to live. The goodness you have makes you want to do good. And the faith you have makes you work. We pray that with his power God will help you do these things more and more.


God saved us and made us his holy people. {\cf2\super [6]} That happened not because of anything we did ourselves. No! God saved us and made us his people because that was what he wanted and because of his grace (kindness). That grace was given to us through Christ Jesus before time began.


Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God has great mercy, and because of his mercy he gave us a new life. This new life brings us a living hope through Jesus Christ’s rising from death.
