Then {both the man and the woman changed. It was like} their eyes opened, {and they saw things differently}. They saw that they had no clothes on—they were naked. So they got some fig leaves and sewed them together and wore the fig leaves for clothes.


Other people will answer, ‘This happened because they left the Lord their God. He brought their ancestors out of Egypt. But they decided to follow other gods. They began to worship and serve those gods. That is why the Lord caused all these bad things to happen to them.’”


Men will see your private parts\par and use you for sex.\par I will make you pay\par for the bad things you did.\par And no man will come to help you.\par


You might ask yourself,\par “Why has this bad thing happened to me?”\par Those things happened because of your many sins.\par Because of your sins,\par your skirt was torn off\par and your shoes were taken away.\par They did this to embarrass you.\par


Jerusalem, I will pull your skirt up over\par your face.\par Everyone will see you,\par and you will be ashamed.\par


I will make the people of Judah\par an example of some terrible thing\par for all the people on earth.\par I will do this to the people of Judah\par because of what Manasseh {\cf2\super [127]} did in Jerusalem.\par Manasseh was the son of King Hezekiah.\par Manasseh was a king of Judah.’\par


“I will punish those people. The punishment will shock all the people on earth. People will make fun of those people from Judah. People will tell jokes about them. People will curse them in all the places where I scatter them.


The people of Israel came into this land and took it for their own. But those people didn’t obey you. They didn’t follow your teachings. They didn’t do the things you commanded. So you made all these terrible things happen to the people of Israel.


“So this is what the Lord says: ‘You people have not obeyed me. You have not given freedom to your fellow Hebrews. Because you have not kept the agreement, I will give “freedom.”’ This is the message of the Lord. ‘(I will give)\} “freedom” to be killed by swords, by terrible sicknesses, and by hunger! I will make you become something that terrifies all the kingdoms of the earth, when they hear about you.


I hear a cry like a woman having a baby.\par It is a scream like a woman\par that is having her first baby.\par It is the cry of the Daughter of Zion. {\cf2\super [32]} \par She is lifting her hands in prayer, saying,\par “Oh! I am about to faint!\par Murderers are all around me!”\par


My people have turned against me,\par and they are very stubborn.\par They say bad things about people.\par They are like bronze and iron,\par that are covered with rust and tarnish.\par


All the people of Jerusalem are groaning.\par All of her people are looking for food.\par They are giving away all their nice things for food.\par They are doing this to keep alive.\par Jerusalem says,\par “Look, Lord. Look at me!\par See how people hate me.\par


Zion {\cf2\super [6]} spread out her hands.\par There was no person to comfort her.\par The Lord had given orders to Jacob’s {\cf2\super [7]} enemies.\par The Lord ordered Jacob’s enemies\par to surround the city.\par Jerusalem has become something dirty.\par She is something dirty among those enemies.\par


The elders of Zion {\cf2\super [16]} sit on the ground.\par They sit on the ground and are quiet.\par They pour dust on their heads.\par They put on sackcloth. {\cf2\super [17]} \par The young women of Jerusalem\par bow their heads to the ground in sorrow.\par


Be happy, people of Edom.\par Be happy, you people that live\par in the land of Uz.\par But remember, the cup of the Lord’s anger\par will come around to you, too.\par When you drink from that cup (punishment),\par you will get drunk\par and will make yourselves naked.\par


And they will show how much they hate you! They will take everything you worked for. And they will leave you bare and naked! People will clearly see your sins. They will see that you acted like a prostitute and dreamed wicked dreams.


The Lord my Master said these things, “Gather the people together. Then let those people punish Oholah and Oholibah. This group of people will punish and make fun of these two women.


And the nations will know why the family of Israel was carried away as prisoners to other countries. They will learn that my people turned against me. So I turned away from them. I let their enemies defeat them. So my people were killed in battle.


Now I will strip her. She will be naked, so all her lovers can see her. No person will be able to save her from my power. {\cf2\super [16]}


\{If she refuses to stop her adultery,\} I will strip her naked. I will leave her like the day she was born. \{I will take away her people\} and she will be like an empty, dry desert. I will kill her with thirst.


I advise you to buy gold from me—gold made pure in fire. Then you can be truly rich. I tell you this: Buy clothes that are white. Then you can cover your shameful nakedness. I also tell you to buy medicine to put on your eyes. Then you can truly see.


“The Lord God of Israel promised that your father’s family would serve him forever. But now the Lord says this, ‘That will never be! I will honor people who honor me. But bad things will happen to people who refuse to respect me.
