“Look, I have made you like\par a new threshing board.\par That tool has many sharp teeth,\par Farmers use it to crush the hulls\par so they will separate from the grain.\par You will trample (walk on) mountains\par and crush them.\par You will make the hills like those hulls.\par


You are destroyed and defeated now.\par Your land is useless.\par But after a short time, you will have\par many people in your land.\par And the people that destroyed you\par will be far, far away.\par


Many shepherds (leaders) have ruined\par my field of grapes.\par Those shepherds have walked\par on the plants in my field.\par Those shepherds have made my beautiful field\par into an empty desert.\par


They changed my field to a desert.\par It is dry and dead.\par No people live there.\par The whole country is an empty desert.\par There is no person left to care for that field.\par


How much longer will the land be dry?\par How long will the grass be dry and dead?\par The animals and birds in the land have died,\par And it is the fault of the wicked people.\par Yet those wicked people are saying,\par “Jeremiah will not live long enough\par to see what happens to us.”\par


Wild donkeys stand on the bare hills.\par They sniff the wind like jackals. {\cf2\super [121]} \par But their eyes can’t find any food,\par because there are no plants to eat.\par


Young lions’ (enemies) roar at Israel.\par The lions growl.\par Lions have destroyed the land of Israel.\par The cities of Israel have been burned.\par There are no people left in them.\par


Your ancestors did not say,\par ‘The Lord brought us from Egypt.\par The Lord led us through the desert.\par The Lord led us through a dry\par and rocky land.\par The Lord led us through a dark\par and dangerous land.\par No people live there.\par People don’t even travel through\par that land.\par But the Lord led us through that land.\par So where is the Lord now?’\par


The land of Judah is full of people that do the sin of adultery. {\cf2\super [183]} \par They are unfaithful in many ways.\par The Lord cursed the land,\par and it became very dry.\par The plants are dried and dying in the pastures.\par The fields have become like the desert.\par The prophets are evil.\par Those prophets use their influence\par and power in the wrong way.\par


A nation from the north will attack Babylon.\par That nation will make Babylon\par like an empty desert.\par No people will live there.\par Both men and animals\par will run away from there.”\par


God, I am very sad and afraid.\par


“I cry about all these things.\par My eyes, my eyes run down with water.\par There is no comforter near me.\par There is no person that can make me feel better.\par My children are like a wasteland.\par They are like that because the enemy won.”\par


My eyes are worn out with tears!\par My insides are upset!\par My heart feels like it has been poured\par on the ground!\par I feel this way because of the destruction\par of my people.\par Children and babies are fainting.\par They are fainting in the public squares\par of the city.\par


Mount Zion is a wasteland.\par Foxes run around on Mount Zion.\par


\{God said,\} “Or, I might send wild animals through that country. And those animals might kill all the people. No person would travel through that country because of the wild animals.


“Son of man, {\cf2\super [217]} sing this sad song about Tyre.


No person or animal will pass through Egypt. Nothing will pass through or settle there for 40 years.


I will make the land empty and a waste. That country will lose all the things it was proud of. The mountains of Israel will become empty. No one will pass through that place.


Bad things will happen wherever your people live. Their cities will become piles of rock. Their high places will be destroyed. Why? So that those places of worship will never be used again. Those altars will all be destroyed. People will never worship those filthy idols again. Those incense altars will be smashed. All the things you made will be completely destroyed!


So the country is like a person crying for the dead, and all of its people are weak. Even the animals of the field, the birds of the sky, and the fish in the sea are dying. {\cf2\super [33]}


Priests, put on your clothes of sadness\par and cry loudly.\par Servants of the altar, {\cf2\super [5]} cry loudly.\par Servants of my God, you will sleep\par in your clothes of sadness.\par Why? Because there will be no more\par grain and drink offerings\par in God’s temple. {\cf2\super [6]} \par


Lord, I am calling to you \{for help\}. Fire has changed our green fields into a desert. Flames have burned all the trees in the field.


People of Israel, listen to this song. This funeral song is about you.


My Master, God All-Powerful, says,\par “People will be crying in the public places.\par People will be crying in the streets.\par People will hire the professional criers. {\cf2\super [71]} \par


Then people will sing songs about you.\par People will sing this sad song:\par ‘We are ruined!\par The Lord took away our land.\par And gave it to other people.\par Yes, he took my land away from me.\par The Lord has divided our fields\par \{among our enemies\}.\par


\{Leaders,\} because of you,\par Zion {\cf2\super [45]} will be destroyed.\par It will become a plowed field.\par Jerusalem will become a pile of rocks.\par Temple Mount will be an empty hill {\cf2\super [46]} overgrown with bushes.\par
