King David said to all the people of Israel that were gathered together, “God chose my son Solomon. Solomon is young and does not know all that he needs to do this work. But the work is very important. This house isn’t for people, this house is for the Lord God.


And help my son Solomon be true to you.\par Help him always obey your commands, laws, and rules.\par Help Solomon to do these things.\par and help him build this capital city\par that I have planned.”\par


Now the city was large and there was plenty of room. But there were few people in it and the houses had not yet been built again.


You will rise and comfort Zion. {\cf2\super [538]} \par The time is coming\par when you will be kind to Zion.\par


Your servants love her (Zion‘s) stones.\par They love even the dust of that city!\par


For the good of my brothers and neighbors,\par I pray there will be peace here.\par


See the tall walls.\par Admire Zion’s palaces.\par Then you can tell the next generation\par about it.\par


In the palaces of that city,\par God is known as the Fortress.\par

The Lord sends his servants to tell messages to the people. And the Lord makes those messages true. The Lord sends messengers to tell the people the things they should do. And the Lord shows their advice is good.


The Lord says to Cyrus, {\cf2\super [398]} \par “You are my shepherd.\par You will do the things I want.\par You will say to Jerusalem,\par ‘You will be built again!’\par You will tell the temple, {\cf2\super [399]} \par ‘Your foundations will be built again!’”\par


“I sent my sheep (people) to other countries. But I will gather together my sheep that are left. And I will bring them back to their pasture (country). When my sheep are back in their pasture, they will have many children and grow in number.


I say this because I know the plans that I have for you.” This message is from the Lord. “I have good plans for you. I don’t plan to hurt you. I plan to give you hope and a good future.


I will let you find me.” This message is from the Lord. “And I will bring you back from your captivity. I forced you to leave this place. But I will gather you from all the nations and places where I have sent you,”—this message is from the Lord—“and I will bring you back to this place.”


Do this because the days will come”—this message is from the Lor —“when I will bring my people, Israel and Judah, back from exile.” {\cf2\super [231]} This message is from the Lord. “I will put those people back in the land that I gave to their ancestors. {\cf2\super [232]} Then my people will own that land again.”


The Lord All-Powerful, the God of Israel, says: “I will again do good things for the people of Judah. I will bring back the people who were taken away as prisoners. At that time, the people in the land of Judah and in its towns will once again use these words: ‘May the Lord bless you, good home and holy mountain!’ {\cf2\super [257]}


This message is from the Lord, “The days are coming when the city of Jerusalem will be built again for the Lord. The whole city will be built again—from the Tower of Hananel to the Corner Gate.


Israel, my bride, I will build you again.\par You will be a country again.\par You will pick up your tambourines again.\par You will dance with all the other people\par that are having fun.\par


The whole valley where dead bodies and ashes are thrown will be holy to the Lord. And all the terraces down to the bottom of Kidron Valley all the way to the corner of Horse Gate will be included. All that area will be holy to the Lord. The city of Jerusalem will never again be torn down or destroyed.”


The Lord All-Powerful, the God of Israel, says: ‘In the future, my people will once again buy houses, fields, and vineyards in the land of Israel.’”


People will use their money and buy fields. They will sign and seal their agreements. People will witness the people signing their deeds. {\cf2\super [275]} People will again buy fields in the land where the family group of Benjamin lives. They will buy fields in the area around Jerusalem. They will buy fields in the towns of the land of Judah, in the hill country, in the western foothills, and in the area of the southern desert. That will happen because I will bring your people back home.” This message is from the Lord.


There will be sounds of joy and happiness. There will be the happy sounds of a bride and groom. There will be the sounds of people bringing their gifts to the Lord’s temple. {\cf2\super [278]} Those people will say, ‘Praise the Lord All-Powerful! The Lord is good! The Lord’s kindness continues forever!’ The people will say these things because I will again do good things to Judah. It will be like in the beginning.” The Lord said these things.


I will make good things happen to Judah and Israel again. I will make those people strong like in the past.


“Jacob, {\cf2\super [370]} my servant, don’t be afraid.\par Don’t be scared, Israel.\par I will save you from those faraway places.\par I will save your children from the countries\par where they are captives. {\cf2\super [371]} \par Jacob will have peace and safety again.\par And no person will make him afraid.”\par


“But in the future, I will make good things\par happen to Elam.”\par This message is from the Lord.\par


“The Ammonite people will be taken away as captives. But the time will come that I will bring the Ammonite people back.” This message is from the Lord.


I will give you many people and animals. And they will grow and have many children. I will bring people to live on you like in the past. I will make it better for you than before. Then you will know that I am the Lord.


I will bring my people, Israel,\par back from captivity.\par They will build the ruined cities again.\par And they will live in those cities.\par They will plant fields of grapes,\par and drink the wine they produce.\par They will plant gardens,\par and eat the crops they produce.\par


Then the Lord’s angel said, “Lord, how long before you comfort Jerusalem and the cities of Judah? You have shown your anger at these cities for 70 years now.”


So the Lord says,\par “I will come back to Jerusalem\par and comfort her.”\par The Lord All-Powerful says,\par “Jerusalem will be built again.\par And my house will be built there.”\par


At that time, I will make the family leaders of Judah like a fire burning in a forest. They will destroy their enemies like fire burning straw. They will destroy the enemy all around them. And the people in Jerusalem will again be able to sit back and relax.”


The Lord will save the people of Judah first, so the people in Jerusalem will not be able to brag too much. David’s family and the other people living in Jerusalem will not be able to brag that they are better than the other people in Judah.


At that time, the whole area around Jerusalem will become \{empty\} like the Arabah desert. The country will be like a desert from Geba to Rimmon in the Negev. But the whole city of Jerusalem will be built again—from Benjamin Gate to the First Gate (that is, the Corner Gate) and from the Tower of Hananel to the king’s winepresses.
