If a good man falls seven times, he will always stand again. But evil people will always be defeated by trouble.


“I will force you to leave your homes.\par You will run in all directions.\par You will be like chaff {\cf2\super [116]} blown away\par by the desert wind.\par


Those people talk to pieces of wood!\par They say, ‘You are my father.’\par Those people speak to a rock.\par They say, ‘You gave birth to me.’\par All those people will be ashamed.\par Those people don’t look at me.\par They have turned their backs to me.\par But when the people of Judah\par get into trouble, they say to me,\par ‘Come and save us!’\par


“Those people should have come to me for help. But they turned their backs to me. I tried to teach those people again and again. But they would not listen to me. I tried to correct them, but they would not listen.


The hired soldiers in Egypt’s army\par are like fat calves.\par They will all turn and run away.\par They will not stand strong\par against the attack.\par Their time of destruction is coming.\par They will soon be punished.\par


Your oarsmen rowed you far out to sea.\par But a powerful east wind\par will destroy your ship at sea.\par


I will turn my head away from them—I won’t look at them. Those strangers will ruin my temple—they will go into the secret parts of that holy building and make it not holy.


\{Israel\} grows among his brothers.\par But a powerful east wind will come—\par the Lord’s wind will blow from the desert.\par Then \{Israel’s\} well will become dry.\par His spring of water will become dry.\par The wind will take every valuable thing\par from \{Israel’s\} treasure.\par


“The Lord will let your enemies defeat you. You will go to fight against your enemies one way, but you will run away from them seven different ways. The bad things that happen to you will make all the people on earth afraid.


The Lord will scatter you among all the people in the world. The Lord will scatter you from one end of the earth to the other. There you will serve false gods made of wood and stone. They are false gods that you or your ancestors [188] never worshiped.


At that time, I will become very angry at them, and I will leave them. I will refuse to help them, and they will be destroyed. Terrible things will happen to them, and they will have many troubles. Then they will say, ‘These bad things happened to us because our God is not with us.’


I will punish them for the bad things they did. But I am saving that punishment for when they slip and do bad things. Their time of trouble is near. Their punishment will come quickly.’
