In Ahaz’s troubles, he sinned worse and became more unfaithful to the Lord.


“People that don’t care about God\par are always bitter.\par Even when God punishes them,\par they refuse to pray to God for help.\par


\{God says,\} “Why should I continue to punish you people? \{I punished you, but you did not change.\} You continue to rebel against me. Now every head and every heart is sick.


There is nothing the leaders can do. (These leaders are “the heads and the tails.” They are “the tops and the stalks of plants.”) {\cf2\super [191]}


But Lord, get ready to punish those people.\par Surely they will see it, won’t they?\par Lord, show the evil people the strong love {\cf2\super [241]} \par that you have for your people.\par Surely the evil people will be ashamed.\par Surely your enemies will be burned\par in their own fire (evil).\par


Look at the people going down to Egypt for help. The people ask for horses. They think horses will save them. The people hope the chariots {\cf2\super [289]} and horse soldiers from Egypt will protect them. The people think they are safe because that army is very big. The people don’t trust the Holy One of Israel (God). The people don’t ask the Lord for help.


These people did evil things,\par and it made me angry.\par So, I punished Israel.\par I turned away from him\par because I was angry.\par And Israel left me.\par He went wherever he wanted.\par


The Lord will use Assyria to punish Judah. Assyria will be hired and used like a razor. It will be like the Lord is shaving the hair from Judah’s head and legs. It will be like the Lord is shaving off Judah’s beard. {\cf2\super [91]}


I will separate the people of Judah\par with my pitchfork. {\cf2\super [128]} \par I will scatter them at the city gates of the land.\par My people have not changed.\par So I will destroy them.\par I will take away their children.\par


I say this because I know the plans that I have for you.” This message is from the Lord. “I have good plans for you. I don’t plan to hurt you. I plan to give you hope and a good future.


Lord, I know that you want people\par to be loyal to you.\par You hit the people of Judah,\par but they did not feel any pain.\par You destroyed them,\par but they refused to learn their lesson.\par They became very stubborn.\par They refused to be sorry\par for the bad things they did.\par


“Son of man, {\cf2\super [174]} speak to Israel. Tell her that she is not pure. {\cf2\super [175]} I am angry at that country, so that country has not received its rain.


“‘You sinned against me\par and became stained with sin.\par I wanted to wash you and make you clean.\par But the stains would not come out.\par I won’t try washing you again\par until my hot anger is finished with you!\par


All of those terrible things happened to us. This happened just like it is written in the Law of Moses. But we still have not asked the Lord for help! We still have not stopped sinning. We still do not pay attention to your truth, Lord.


I will go back to my place,\par until the people admit they are guilty,\par until they come looking for me.\par Yes, in their trouble they will try hard\par to find me.”\par


\{Ephraim’s\} pride speaks against him.\par The people had many, many troubles,\par but they still didn’t go back\par to the Lord their God.\par The people didn’t look to him for help.\par


But they were like a boomerang. {\cf2\super [74]} \par They changed directions,\par but they did not come back to me. {\cf2\super [75]} \par Their leaders bragged \{about their strength\}.\par But they will be killed with swords.\par And the people in Egypt will laugh at them.\par


“I sent diseases against you, like I did to Egypt. I killed your young men with swords. I took away your horses. I made your camp smell very bad \{from all the dead bodies\}. But still you didn’t come back to me \{for help\}.” The Lord said those things.


“\{I did many things to try to make you come to me.\} I didn’t give you any food to eat. {\cf2\super [53]} There was no food in any of your cities. But you didn’t come back to me.” The Lord said those things.


Some people turned away from the Lord. They quit following me. Those people stopped asking the Lord for help. So I will remove those people from that place.”


But there in these other lands you will look for the Lord your God. And if you look for him with all your heart and soul, you will find him.
