Ezra \{and the group with him\} left Babylon on the first day of the first month. He arrived in Jerusalem on the first day of the fifth month. The Lord God was with Ezra.


Because God was with us, Iddo’s relatives sent these men to us:


I was embarrassed to ask King Artaxerxes for soldiers and horsemen to protect us as we traveled. There were enemies on the road. The reason I was embarrassed to ask for protection was because of what we had told the king. We had said to King Artaxerxes, “Our God is with every person that trusts him. But God is very angry with every person that turns away from him.”


On the twelfth day of the first month {\cf2\super [57]} we left the Ahava River and started toward Jerusalem. God was with us, and he protected us from enemies and robbers along the way.


Good people see this,\par and they are happy.\par But wicked people see this,\par and they don’t know what to say.\par


Happiness is like good medicine. But sorrow is like a sickness.


If you do this, then it will be like medicine for your body or a refreshing drink that makes you strong again.


\{God will say,\} “I will use Assyria {\cf2\super [113]} like a stick. In anger, I will use Assyria to punish Israel.


The Lord and this army\par are coming from a faraway land.\par They are coming from beyond the horizon.\par The Lord will use this army like a weapon\par to show his anger.\par This army will destroy the whole country.”\par


\{But the Lord says,\}\par “Your people have died,\par but they will live again.\par The bodies of my people\par will rise from death.\par Dead people in the ground,\par stand and be happy!\par The dew covering you is like\par the dew sparkling in the light of a new day.\par It shows a new time is coming when the earth\par will give up the dead people\par that are in it.”\par


My people, go into your rooms.\par Lock your doors.\par Hide in your rooms for a short time.\par Hide until God’s anger is finished.\par


Look! The Lord’s Name is coming from far away. His anger is like a fire with thick clouds of smoke. The Lord’s mouth is filled with anger, and his tongue is like a burning fire.


Look at Zion {\cf2\super [310]} , the city of our religious holidays. Look at Jerusalem—that beautiful place of rest. Jerusalem is like a tent that will never be moved. The pegs that hold her in place will never be pulled up. Her ropes will never be broken.


The Lord is angry at all the nations and their armies. The Lord will destroy them all. He will cause them all to be killed.


The desert will be full of growing flowers and will begin to show its happiness. It will seem like the desert is dancing with joy. The desert will be beautiful like the forest of Lebanon, {\cf2\super [327]} the hill of Carmel, {\cf2\super [328]} and Sharon Valley. {\cf2\super [329]} This will happen because all people will see the Glory of the Lord. {\cf2\super [330]} People will see the beauty of our God.


People will see these things,\par and they will know\par that the Lord’s power did this.\par The people will see these things,\par and they will begin to understand.\par that the Holy One (God) of Israel\par did these things.”\par


The Lord will go out like a strong soldier.\par He will be like a man ready to fight a war.\par He will become very excited.\par He will cry out and shout loudly,\par and he will defeat his enemies.\par


The Lord will always lead you. He will satisfy your soul in dry lands. The Lord will give strength to your bones. You will be like a garden that has much water. You will be like a spring that always has water.


The Lord is angry at his enemies.\par So the Lord will give them\par the punishment they deserve.\par The Lord is angry with his enemies.\par So the Lord will punish the people\par in all the faraway places.\par The Lord will give them\par the punishment they deserve.\par


You people that obey the Lord’s commands\par should listen to the things\par the Lord says,\par “Your brothers hated you.\par They turned against you\par because you followed me.\par Your brothers said,\par ‘We will come back to you\par when the Lord is honored.\par Then we will be happy with you.’\par Those bad people will be punished.\par


The people of Ephraim {\cf2\super [26]} will be as happy as soldiers that have too much to drink. Their children will be rejoicing and they, too, will be happy. They will all have a happy time together with the Lord.


It is the same with you. Now you are sad. But I will see you again and you will be truly happy. You will have a happiness that no one can take away.


If we continue sinning, all we have is fear in waiting for the judgment and the angry fire that will destroy all people who live against God.
