There near the Ahava River, I (Ezra) announced that we all should fast. {\cf2\super [53]} We should fast to make ourselves humble before our God. We wanted to ask God for a safe trip for ourselves, our children, and for all the things we owned.


I calmed myself down and then I went to the rich families and the officials. I told them, “You are forcing your own people to pay interest on the money you loan them! \{You must stop doing that!\} Then I called for all the people to meet together.


Why do I say that?\par Because Job says,\par ‘A person will gain nothing\par if he tries to please God.’\par


I cry and fast, {\cf2\super [402]} \par and they make fun of me for it.\par


If a person refuses to listen to \{God’s\} teachings, then \{God\} will refuse to hear his prayers.


So, my Master, the Lord All-Powerful, will tell the people to cry and be sad \{for their dead friends\}. People will shave their heads and wear clothes of sadness.


But look! The people are happy now. The people are rejoicing. \{The people are saying\}:


“I was angry at my people.\par Those people belong to me,\par but I was angry,\par so I made them not important.\par I gave them to you,\par and you punished them.\par But you showed no mercy to them.\par You made even the old people\par work hard.\par


“This law will always continue for you: On the tenth {day} of the seventh month, you must not eat food. [297] You must not do any work. None of the travelers or foreigners living in your land can do any work either.


This day is a very important day of rest for you. You must not eat food. [300] This law will continue forever.


“The Day of Atonement [407] will be on the tenth day of the seventh month. There will be a holy meeting. You must not eat food [408] and you must bring an offering by fire to the Lord.


You said, “It is useless to worship the Lord. We did the things the Lord told us— but we didn’t gain anything. We were sad \{for our sins\} like people crying at a funeral. But it didn’t help.


God came to Balaam at that place. And Balaam said, “I have prepared seven altars. [290] And I have killed a bull and a ram as a sacrifice on each altar.”


The son said to his father, ‘I have served you like a slave for many years! I have always obeyed your commands. But you never killed even a goat for me! You never gave a party for me and my friends.
