Children, listen to me,\par and I will teach you to respect the Lord.\par


Lord, they get new strength\par from the good things in your house.\par You let them drink\par from your wonderful river.\par


I will be satisfied\par as if I had eaten the best foods.\par And with joyful lips\par my mouth will praise you. {\cf2\super [370]} \par


The Lord said, “You must obey the Lord, your God. You must do the things he says are right. If you obey all the Lord’s commands and laws, then you will not be sick like the Egyptians. I, the Lord, will not give you any of the sicknesses I gave the Egyptians. I am the Lord. I am the one who makes you well.”


But the person who obeys me will live safely. That person will be comfortable. He will not have to be afraid of evil.”

\{Assyria {\cf2\super [125]} will bring troubles to you—those troubles will be like weights you have to carry on\} a pole across your shoulder. But, that pole will be taken off your neck. That pole will be broken by your strength (God).


At that time, the Lord All-Powerful will give a feast for all the people on this mountain. At the feast, there will be the best foods and wines. The meat will be tender and good.


That man does not know what he is doing. He is confused, so his heart leads him the wrong way. That man can’t save himself. And he can’t see that he is doing wrong. That man will not say, “This statue I am holding is a false god.”


Some people are rich with gold and silver. Gold falls from their purses, and they weigh their silver on scales. Those people pay an artist to make a false god from wood. Then those people bow down and worship that false god.


“Some of you people try hard to live good lives. You go to the Lord for help. Listen to me. You should look at Abraham your father. He is the rock you were cut from.


“My people, listen to me!\par My decisions will be like lights\par showing people how to live.\par


You people that understand goodness\par should listen to me.\par You people that follow my teachings\par should hear the things I say.\par Don’t be afraid of evil people.\par Don’t be afraid of the bad things\par that they say to you.\par


The Lord made a promise.\par The Lord used his own power as proof.\par And the Lord will use his power\par to keep that promise.\par


The person that gathers food will eat it,\par and that person will praise the Lord.\par The person that gathers the grapes,\par will drink the wine \{from those grapes\}.\par All these things will happen\par in my holy land.”\par


Women will never again suffer childbirth\par \{only to have the baby die\}.\par Women will never again be afraid\par of what might happen during childbirth.\par All my people and their children\par will be blessed by the Lord.\par


The people will plant wheat,\par but they will harvest only thorns.\par They will work hard until they are very tired,\par but they will get nothing for all their work.\par They will be ashamed of their crop.\par The Lord’s anger caused those things.”\par


But you must be careful to obey me.” This message is from the Lord. “You must not bring a load through the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath. You must make the Sabbath day a holy day. You will do this by not doing any work on that day.


“My people have done two evil things.\par They turned away from me\par (I am the spring of living water),\par and they dug their own water cisterns.\par (They turned to other gods.)\par But their cisterns are broken.\par Those cisterns can’t hold water.\par


I will give the priests plenty of food.\par And my people will be filled and satisfied\par with the good things I give them.”\par This message is from the Lord.\par


Ephraim {\cf2\super [127]} is wasting its time—Israel “chases the wind” all day long. The people tell more and more lies. They steal more and more. They have made agreements with Assyria, and they are carrying their olive oil to Egypt.


The Israelites \{did a foolish thing\}—it was like trying to plant the wind. But \{they will get only troubles\}—they will harvest a whirlwind. The grain in the fields will grow. It will give no food. Even if it grew something, strangers would eat it.


The Lord All-Powerful has decided that a fire will destroy everything that those people worked to build. All their work will be for nothing.


Their worship of me is for nothing.\par The things they teach are only rules\par that people have made.’”\par \i (Isaiah 29:13)\i0 \par


“Then the king sent some more servants. The king said to the servants, ‘I have already invited those people. So tell them that my feast is ready. I have killed my best bulls and calves to be eaten. Everything is ready. Come to the wedding feast.’


What great blessings there are for the people that want to do right more than anything else {\cf2\super [59]} !\par God will fully satisfy them.\par


Jesus called the people to him again. He said, “Every person should listen to me and understand what I am saying.


Bring our fat calf. We will kill it and have plenty to eat. Then we can have a party!


Earthly food spoils and ruins. So don’t work to get that kind of food. But work to get the food that stays good always and gives you life forever. The Son of Man {\cf2\super [87]} will give you that food. God the Father showed that he is with the Son of Man.”


So faith comes from hearing \{the Good News {\cf2\super [110]} \}. And people hear \{the Good News\} when a person tells them about Christ.


And the people of Israel {\cf2\super [96]} tried to follow a law to make themselves right with God. But they did not succeed.


{“The Lord says,} ‘You must listen carefully to the commands I give you today: You must love the Lord your God, and serve him with all your heart and all your soul. If you do that, then


Don’t let all kinds of strange teachings lead you into the wrong way. Your hearts should be strengthened by God’s grace (kindness), not by obeying rules about foods. Obeying those rules doesn’t help people.
