Isaiah 24:5 - Easy To Read Version

5 The people on the land have made the land dirty. \{How did this happen\}? The people did wrong things against God’s teaching. The people did not obey God’s laws. The people made an agreement with God a long time ago, but those people broke their agreement with God.

God made my family strong and secure. [145] He made an agreement with me forever! God made sure this agreement was good and secure in every way. So surely he will give me every victory. He will give me everything I want!


So the Lord of Israel says, ‘Look! I will bring so much trouble against Jerusalem and Judah that any person who hears about it will be shocked. [261]


Why? Because my people did the things that I said were wrong. They have made me angry with them since the day their ancestors [264] came up out of Egypt.


Manasseh encouraged the people of Judah and the people living in Jerusalem to do wrong. They were worse than the nations that were in the land before the Israelites—and the Lord destroyed those people!


Then he made it a law for Jacob.\par God made his Agreement with Israel.\par It will continue forever!\par


I am scared and shaking.\par I am terrified.\par


I will send Assyria to fight against the people that do evil things. I am angry at those people, and I will command Assyria to fight against them. Assyria will defeat them and Assyria will take their wealth from them. Israel will become like dirt for Assyria to trample (walk on) in the streets.


These people are like children that refuse to obey \{their parents\}. They lie and refuse to listen to the Lord’s teachings.


The roads are destroyed. No one is walking in the streets. People have broken the agreements they made. People refuse to believe the proof from witnesses. {\cf2\super [301]} No one respects other people.


The Lord says,\par “\{People of Israel, you say that I divorced\par your mother, Jerusalem.\}\par But where is the legal paper\par that proves I divorced her?\par My children, did I owe money to someone?\par Did I sell you to pay a debt?\par No! You were sold\par because of the bad things you did.\par Your mother (Jerusalem) was sent away\par because of the bad things you did.\par


All the people are evil. So the Lord is not happy with the young men. And the Lord will not show mercy to their widows and orphans. {\cf2\super [111]} Why? Because all the people are evil. The people do things that are against God. The people speak lies. So God will continue to be angry with the people. God will continue to punish the people.


Those people are doing the same sins that their ancestors did. Their ancestors {\cf2\super [93]} refused to listen to my message. They followed and worshiped other gods. The family of Israel and the family of Judah have broken the Agreement {\cf2\super [94]} I made with their ancestors.”


Those people will ask how to go to Zion. {\cf2\super [409]} \par They will start to go in that direction.\par The people will say,\par ‘Come, let us join ourselves to the Lord.\par Let’s make an agreement\par that will last forever.\par Let’s make an agreement\par that we will never forget.’\par


“‘But the family of Israel turned against me in the desert. They did not follow my laws. They refused to obey my rules. \{And they are good rules\}—if a person obeys those rules, then he will live. They treated my special days of rest as if they were not important. They worked on those days many, many times. I decided to destroy them in the desert—to let them feel the full force of my anger.


“‘The people of Israel did not obey my commands. They refused to obey my laws. They treated my special days of rest like they were not important. And they worshiped the filthy idols of their fathers.


And I will make a peace agreement with them. This agreement will continue forever. I agree to give them their land. I agree to make them become many, many people. And I agree to put my holy place among them forever.


This special king will say things against God Most High. And that king will hurt and kill God’s special people. That king will try to change the times and laws that have already been set. God’s special people will be in that king’s power for 3 1/2 years. {\cf2\super [82]}


We have not obeyed the Lord our God. The Lord used his servants, the prophets, and gave us laws—but we have not obeyed his laws.


“But Lord, we have sinned! We have done wrong. We have done bad things. We turned against you. We turned away from your commands and fair decisions.


But the people broke the Agreement\par just like Adam did. {\cf2\super [65]} \par They were unfaithful to me\par in their country.\par


“You must remember all my laws and rules. And you must obey them. I am leading you to your land. You will live in that country. If you obey my laws and rules, then that land will not vomit you out.


{The law says the land should have a year of rest every seven years.} During the time that the land is empty, it will get the time of rest that you did not give it while you lived there.


Get up and leave!\par This will not be your place of rest.\par Why? Because you ruined this place!\par You made it unclean,\par So it will be destroyed!\par It will be a terrible destruction!\par


Zechariah and Elizabeth were truly good people before God. They did everything the Lord (God) commanded and told people to do. They were without fault.


“But Jeshurun [212] became fat and kicked {like a bull}. (Yes, you people were fed well! You became full and fat!) Then he left the God who made him! He ran away from the Rock who saved him.


So the Lord said, ‘I will turn away from them, then let’s see what happens! They are a rebellious people. They are like children who won’t learn their lessons!


The first agreement {\cf2\super [92]} had rules for worship. And it had a man-made place for worship.


This will happen if you refuse to keep your agreement with the Lord your God. You will lose this land if you go and serve other gods. You must not worship those other gods. If you do, the Lord will become very angry at you. Then you will quickly be forced to leave this good land that he gave you.”


So that day Joshua made an agreement for the people. Joshua made this agreement at the town called Shechem. It became a law for them to follow.
