The king of Assyria heard a rumor about Tirhakah king of Ethiopia. The rumor said, “Tirhakah has come to fight against you!”


Protect me like the pupil {\cf2\super [90]} of your eye.\par Hide me in the shadow of your wings.\par


Nothing is more precious\par than your loving kindness.\par People and angels {\cf2\super [222]} come to you\par for protection.\par


God, be merciful to me.\par Be kind because my soul trusts you.\par I have come to you for protection,\par while the trouble passes.\par


I want to live in your Tent {\cf2\super [361]} forever.\par I want to hide where you can protect me.\par \i (SELAH {\cf2\super [362]})\i0 \par


You really have helped me!\par I am happy that you protected me!\par


You can go to God for protection.\par He will protect you\par like a bird spreading its wings\par over its babies.\par God will be like a shield and a wall protecting you.\par


Look at the people going down to Egypt for help. The people ask for horses. They think horses will save them. The people hope the chariots {\cf2\super [289]} and horse soldiers from Egypt will protect them. The people think they are safe because that army is very big. The people don’t trust the Holy One of Israel (God). The people don’t ask the Lord for help.


The Lord says,\par “Egypt and Ethiopia are rich,\par but Israel, you will get those riches.\par The tall people from Seba will be yours.\par They will walk behind you\par with chains around their necks.\par They will bow down before you.\par And they will pray to you.”\par \{Israel\}, God is with you.\par And there is no other God.\par


“‘At that time, I will send out messengers. They will go in ships to carry the bad news to Ethiopia. Ethiopia now feels safe. But the people of Ethiopia will shake with fear at the time Egypt is punished. That time is coming!


People of Ethiopia, this means even you! The Lord’s sword will kill your people.


People will come all the way from the other side of the river in Ethiopia. My scattered people will come to me. My worshipers will come and bring their gifts to me.


“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem! You kill the prophets. {\cf2\super [361]} You kill with rocks those men that God sent to you. Many, many times I wanted to help your people. I wanted to gather your people together like a hen gathers her chicks under her wings. But you did not let me.


The Lord will reward you for all the good things you have done. You will be paid in full by the Lord, the God of Israel. You have come to him for safety, [10] {and he will protect you}.”
