{After Shallum died,} Menahem defeated Tiphsah and the area around it. The people refused to open {the city gate} for him. So Menahem defeated them and ripped open all the pregnant women in that city.


So the Lord became very angry at Israel and took them out of his sight. There were no Israelites left, except the family group of Judah!


The king of Assyria attacked many places in Israel. Then he came to Samaria. He fought against Samaria for three years.


The king of Assyria took Samaria during the ninth year that Hoshea was king of Israel. The king of Assyria captured many Israelites and took them as prisoners to Assyria. He made them live in Halah by the Habor River at Gozan and in other cities of the Medes.


Hazael said, “Sir, why are you crying?”


Everything in their houses will be stolen. Their wives will be raped. And their little children will be beaten to death while the people are watching.


The fort cities of Ephraim (Israel)\par will be destroyed.\par The government in Damascus\par will be finished.\par The same thing that happens to Israel,\par will happen to Aram. {\cf2\super [176]} \par All the important people\par will be taken away.”\par


\{Why?\} Because before the boy learns to say, ‘Mama’ and ‘Daddy,’ God will take all the wealth and riches from Damascus {\cf2\super [95]} and Samaria, {\cf2\super [96]} and God will give those things to the king of Assyria. {\cf2\super [97]} ”


The people of Israel tried to trick God.\par But now they must accept their guilt.\par The Lord will break down their altars. {\cf2\super [98]} \par He will destroy their memorial stones. {\cf2\super [99]} \par


The sword will swing against their cities. It will kill their strong men. It will destroy their leaders.


They never call to me from their hearts.\par Yes, they cry on their beds.\par And they cut themselves\par when they ask for grain and\par new wine.\par But \{in their hearts,\} they have turned away\par from me.\par


The Lord says these things: “I will definitely punish \{the people of\} Ammon {\cf2\super [25]} for the many crimes they did. {\cf2\super [26]} Why? Because they killed the pregnant women in Gilead. {\cf2\super [27]} The Ammonite people did this so they could \{take that land\} and make their country larger.


This is the vision {\cf2\super [1]} of Obadiah. The Lord my Master says this about Edom: {\cf2\super [2]}


The mountains will melt under him\par like wax before a fire.\par The valleys will split open\par and flow like water down a steep hill.\par


Why? Because you obey the laws of Omri. {\cf2\super [78]} \par You do all the \{bad\} things\par that Ahab’s family does.\par You follow their teachings.\par So I will let you be destroyed.\par People will whistle in amazement\par when they see your destroyed city.\par Then you will bear the shame\par that the other nations bring to you. {\cf2\super [79]} \par


But Thebes was defeated. Her people were taken away as prisoners to a foreign country. Soldiers beat her small children to death at every street corner. They threw lots {\cf2\super [9]} to see who got to keep the important people as slaves. They put chains on all the important men of Thebes.
