39 Now, family of Israel, the Lord my Master says these things, “If any person wants to worship his filthy idols, then let him go and worship them. But later, don’t think you will get any advice from me! You will not ruin my name any more! Not when you continue to give your gifts to your filthy idols.”

Elisha said to the king of Israel (Jehoram), “What do you want from me? Go to the prophets of your father and mother!”


So I let them do what they wanted to do.\par Israel did anything they wanted to do.\par


The Lord is not happy when evil people offer him sacrifices, especially when those evil people are trying to get something from him.


Some people kill bulls \{as a sacrifice\},\par but they also beat people.\par Those people kill sheep as a sacrifice,\par but they also break the necks of dogs!\par Those people offer up grain offerings,\par but they also offer the blood of pigs! {\cf2\super [475]} \par Those people burn incense, {\cf2\super [476]} \par but they also love their worthless idols. {\cf2\super [477]} \par Those people choose their own ways.\par And they also love their terrible idols.\par


The voice from the temple said to me, “Son of man, {\cf2\super [398]} this is the place with my throne and footstool. I will live in this place among the people of Israel forever. The family of Israel won’t ruin my holy name again. The kings and their people won’t bring shame to my name by doing sexual sins {\cf2\super [399]} or by burying the dead bodies of their kings in this place.


Ephraim {\cf2\super [47]} has joined his idols. {\cf2\super [48]} So leave him alone.


And when a person dies, a relative will come to get the body so he can take it out and burn it. {\cf2\super [81]} The relative will come to take away the bones. He will call to any person who might be hiding way back in the house, “Are there any other \{dead bodies\} in there with you?”


“No person can serve two masters at the same time. He will hate one master and love the other master. Or he will follow one master and refuse to follow the other master. So you cannot serve God and Money {\cf2\super [81]} at the same time.


But God turned against them. God finished trying to stop them from worshiping the army \{of false gods\} in the sky. This is what is written in the book of the prophets {\cf2\super [142]} : God says,


But those people refused to love the truth, so God sends them something powerful that leads them away from the truth. God sends them that power so that they will believe something that is not true.


“But maybe you don’t want to serve the Lord. You must choose for yourselves today. Today you must decide who you will serve. Will you serve the gods that your ancestors worshiped when they lived on the other side of the Euphrates River? Or will you serve the gods of the Amorite people that lived in this land? You must choose for yourselves. But as for me and my family, we will serve the Lord!”


You like worshiping those gods, so go call to them for help. Let those gods save you when you are in trouble.”
