1 Kings 9:8 - Easy To Read Version

8 This temple will be destroyed. Every person who sees it will be amazed. They will ask, ‘Why did the Lord do this terrible thing to this land and to this temple?’

The people of Judah left me and have burned incense [274] to other gods. They made me very angry. They made many idols. [275] That is why I will show my anger against this place. My anger will be like a fire that can’t be stopped!’


Nebuzaradan burned the Lord’s temple, [318] the king’s house, and all the houses in Jerusalem. He destroyed even the largest houses.


So, the Lord became very angry at the people of Judah and Jerusalem. The Lord punished them. Other peoples became afraid and were shocked when they saw what the Lord did to the people of Judah and Jerusalem. Those other people shook their heads with hate and shame for the people of Judah. You know these things are true. You can see with your own eyes.


Nebuchadnezzar and his army burned the temple. They broke down Jerusalem’s wall and burned all the houses that belonged to the king and his officials. They took or destroyed every valuable thing in Jerusalem.


Every person who passes by this temple that was so highly honored will be surprised. They will say, ‘Why has the Lord done this terrible thing to the land and to this temple?’


Our ancestors worshiped you in\par our holy temple.\par Our temple was so wonderful,\par but now it has been burned in the fire!\par All our precious possessions\par have been destroyed.\par


“Jeremiah, you will tell the people of Judah these things. And the people will ask you, ‘Why has the Lord said these terrible things to us? What have we done wrong? What sin have we done against the Lord our God?’


So Judah’s country will become\par an empty desert.\par People will whistle and shake their heads\par every time they pass by.\par They will be shocked\par at how the country was destroyed.\par


I will completely destroy this city. People will whistle and shake their heads when they pass by Jerusalem. They will be shocked when they see how the city was destroyed.


Coniah (Jehoiachin) is like a broken pot\par that some person threw away.\par He is like a pot that no person wants.\par Why will Jehoiachin and his children\par be thrown out?\par Why will they be thrown away\par into a foreign land?\par


So I will soon send for all the family groups of the north. {\cf2\super [202]} ” This message is from the Lord. “I will soon send for Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. He is my servant. I will bring those people against the land of Judah and against the people of Judah. I will bring them against all the nations around you too. I will destroy all of those countries. I will make those lands like an empty desert forever. People will see those countries, and whistle at how badly they were destroyed.


Why do you people want to make me angry by making idols? Now you are living in Egypt. And now you are making me angry by offering sacrifices to the false gods of Egypt. You people will destroy yourselves. It will be your own fault. You will make yourselves something that people of other nations will speak evil of. And all the other nations on the earth will make fun of you.


“Edom will be destroyed.\par People will be shocked\par to see the destroyed cities.\par People will whistle from amazement\par at the destroyed cities.\par


The people of Judah will ask you,\par ‘Jeremiah, why has the Lord our God\par done this bad thing to us?’\par Give them this answer:\par ‘You people of Judah have left the Lord,\par and you have served foreign idols\par in your own land.\par You did those things, so now\par you will serve foreigners in a land\par that doesn’t belong to you.’”\par


The Lord will show his anger,\par so no people will live there.\par Babylon will be completely empty.\par Everyone that passes by Babylon\par will be afraid.\par They will shake their heads when they see\par how badly it has been destroyed.\par


Nebuzaradan burned the Lord’s temple. He also burned down the king’s house and all the houses of Jerusalem. He burned down every important building in Jerusalem.


The people that pass by on the road\par clap their hands at you in shock.\par They whistle and shake their heads\par at the Daughter of Jerusalem.\par They ask,\par “Is this the city that people called,\par ‘The Perfectly Beautiful City’ and\par ‘The Joy of all the Earth’?”\par


“God said those things would happen to us and our leaders—and he made them happen. He made terrible things happen to us. No other city suffered the way Jerusalem suffered.


In the countries where the Lord will send you, the people will be shocked at the bad things that happen to you. They will laugh at you and say bad things about you.


All the land will be useless—destroyed by burning sulfur and covered with salt. The land will have nothing planted in it. Nothing will be growing—not even weeds. The land will be destroyed like Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, the cities the Lord destroyed when he was very angry.
