But Leah replied to her, ‘Isn’t it enough that you have taken my husband? Now you also want to take my son’s mandrakes? ’ ‘Well then,’ Rachel said, ‘he can sleep with you tonight in exchange for your son’s mandrakes.’


What you have done so far  was a little thing to you, Lord God, for you have also spoken about your servant’s house in the distant future. And this is a revelation  for mankind, Lord God.


He said to the Levites who taught all Israel  the holy things of the Lord, ‘Put the holy ark in the temple built by Solomon son of David king of Israel. Since you do not have to carry it on your shoulders,  now serve the Lord your God and his people Israel.


On that same day men were placed in charge of the rooms  that housed the supplies, contributions, firstfruits, and tenths.  The legally required portions for the priests and Levites  were gathered from the village fields, because Judah was grateful to the priests and Levites who were serving.


Isaiah  said, ‘Listen, house of David! Is it not enough for you to try the patience of men? Will you also try the patience of my God?


Isn’t it enough for you to feed on the good pasture? Must you also trample the rest of the pasture with your feet? Or isn’t it enough that you drink the clear water? Must you also muddy the rest with your feet?


‘They are the ones who may enter my sanctuary  and approach my table to serve me.  They will keep my mandate.


The Levites are to camp round the tabernacle of the testimony and watch over it, so that no wrath will fall on the Israelite community.’


Is it not enough that you brought us up from a land flowing with milk and honey to kill us in the wilderness?  Do you also have to appoint yourself as ruler over us?


Moses also told Korah, ‘Now listen, Levites!


‘Bring the tribe of Levi near and present them to the priest Aaron to assist him.


Assign the Levites to Aaron and his sons; they have been assigned exclusively to him  from the Israelites.


As they were worshipping  the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.’


It is of little  importance to me that I should be judged  by you or by any human court.  In fact, I don’t even judge myself.


‘At that time the Lord set apart the tribe of Levi  to carry the ark of the Lord’s covenant, to stand before the Lord to serve him, and to pronounce blessings in his name, as it is today.


Saul’s servants reported these words directly to David, but he replied, ‘Is it trivial in your sight to become the king’s son-in-law? I am a poor commoner.’
