1 The Israelites, however, were unfaithful  regarding the things set apart for destruction. Achan son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took some of what was set apart, and the Lord’s anger burned against the Israelites.

Jacob’s sons came to the slaughter and plundered the city because their sister had been defiled.


The Lord’s anger burned against Israel again, and he stirred up David against them to say, ‘Go, count the people of Israel and Judah.’


When Gehazi came to the hill,  , he took the gifts from them and deposited them in the house. Then he dismissed the men, and they left.


This command was also evil in God’s sight, so he afflicted Israel.


and they abandoned the temple of the Lord, the God of their ancestors, and served the Asherah poles and the idols.  So there was wrath  against Judah and Jerusalem for this guilt of theirs.


And I said: My God, I am ashamed and embarrassed to lift my face towards you, my God, because our iniquities are higher than our heads and our guilt is as high as the heavens.


Your wickedness affects a person like yourself, and your righteousness, a son of man.


Wisdom is better than weapons of war, but one sinner can destroy much good.


Lord, righteousness belongs to you,  but this day public shame belongs to us: the men of Judah, the residents of Jerusalem, and all Israel #– #those who are near and those who are far, in all the countries where you have banished them because of the disloyalty they have shown towards you.


Then Moses said to Aaron and his sons Eleazar and Ithamar,  ‘Do not let your hair hang loose  and do not tear your clothes,  or else you will die, and the Lord will become angry  with the whole community. However, your brothers, the whole house of Israel, may weep  over the fire that the Lord caused.


‘Come on! ’ the sailors said to each other. ‘Let’s cast lots.  Then we’ll know who is to blame for this trouble we’re in.’ So they cast lots, and the lot singled out Jonah.


‘This is what the Lord’s entire community says: “What is this treachery you have committed today against the God of Israel by turning away from the Lord and building an altar for yourselves, so that you are in rebellion against the Lord today?


and now would you turn away from the Lord? If you rebel against the Lord today, tomorrow he will be angry with the entire community of Israel.


Wasn’t Achan son of Zerah unfaithful regarding what was set apart for destruction, bringing wrath on the entire community of Israel? He was not the only one who perished because of his iniquity.” ’
