16 As to the terror you cause, your arrogant heart has deceived you. You who live in the clefts of the rock, you who occupy the mountain summit, though you elevate your nest like the eagles, even from there I will bring you down. This is the  Lord’s declaration.

Amaziah killed ten thousand Edomites in Salt Valley.  He took Sela  in battle and called it Joktheel,  which is still its name today.


Does the eagle soar at your command and make its nest  on high?


Pride comes before destruction, and an arrogant spirit before a fall.


Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.


A person’s pride will humble him, but a humble spirit will gain honour.


My dove,  in the clefts of the rock, in the crevices of the cliff, let me see your face, let me hear your voice; for your voice is sweet, and your face is lovely.


My hand has reached out, as if into a nest, to seize the wealth of the nations. Like one gathering abandoned eggs, I gathered the whole earth. No wing fluttered; no beak opened or chirped.


They will go into the caves of the rocks and the crevices in the cliffs, away from the terror of the  Lord and from his majestic splendour, when he rises to terrify the earth.


For this is what the  Lord  says: ‘Even the captives of a mighty man will be taken, and the prey of a tyrant will be delivered; I will contend with the one who contends with you, and I will save your children.


How can you say, ‘We are warriors – valiant men for battle’?


I will certainly make you insignificant among the nations, despised among humanity.


Summon the archers to Babylon, all who string the bow; camp all round her; let none escape. Repay her according to her deeds; just as she has done, do the same to her, for she has acted arrogantly against the  Lord, against the Holy One of Israel.


Even if Babylon should ascend to the heavens and fortify her tall fortresses, destroyers will come against her from me. This is the  Lord’s declaration.


If they dig down to Sheol, from there my hand will take them; if they climb up to heaven, from there I will bring them down.


Woe to him who dishonestly makes wealth for his house  , to place his nest on high, to escape the grasp of disaster!


but I hated Esau.  I turned his mountains into a wasteland, and gave his inheritance to the desert jackals.’
