Like a bird fleeing, forced from the nest, the daughters of Moab will be at the fords of the Arnon.


Its collapse will be like the shattering of a potter’s jar,  crushed to pieces, so that not even a fragment of pottery will be found among its shattered remains – no fragment large enough to take fire from a hearth or scoop water from a cistern.’


Their nobles send their servants  for water. They go to the cisterns; they find no water; their containers return empty. They are ashamed and humiliated; they cover their heads.


‘Then you are to shatter the jar in the presence of the people going with you,


Wail, you shepherds, and cry out. Roll in the dust,  you leaders of the flock. Because the days of your slaughter have come, you will fall and become shattered like a precious vase.


I am going to send for all the families of the north”   #– #this is the Lord’s declaration #– #”and send for my servant  Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and I will bring them against this land, against its residents, and against all these surrounding nations, and I will completely destroy them and make them an example of horror  and scorn, and ruins for ever.


Moab has been left quiet since his youth, settled like wine on its dregs. He hasn’t been poured from one container to another or gone into exile. So his taste has remained the same, and his aroma hasn’t changed.


Moab will be put to shame because of Chemosh, just as the house of Israel was put to shame because of Bethel  that they trusted in.


The destroyer of Moab and its towns has come up, and the best of its young men have gone down to slaughter. This is the King’s declaration; the Lord of Armies is his name.


On all the rooftops of Moab and in her public squares, everyone is mourning because I have shattered Moab like a jar no one wants.’  This is the Lord’s declaration.


The destroyer  will move against every town; not one town will escape. The valley will perish, and the plain will be annihilated, as the Lord has said.


For the Lord will restore the majesty of Jacob, yes,  the majesty of Israel, though ravagers have ravaged them and ruined their vine branches.
