You will winnow them and a wind will carry them away, a whirlwind will scatter them. But you will rejoice in the  Lord; you will boast in the Holy One of Israel.


Aram from the east and Philistia from the west have consumed Israel with open mouths. In all this, his anger has not turned away, and his hand is still raised to strike.


The people did not turn to him who struck them; they did not seek the  Lord of Armies.


Therefore, hand their children over to famine, and give them over to the power of the sword. Let their wives become childless and widowed, their husbands slain by deadly disease, their young men struck down by the sword in battle.


Lord, don’t your eyes look for faithfulness? You have struck them, but they felt no pain. You finished them off, but they refused to accept discipline. They made their faces harder than rock, and they refused to return.


I will send strangers to Babylon who will scatter her and strip her land bare, for they will come against her from every side in the day of disaster.


for Death  has climbed through our windows; it has entered our fortresses, cutting off children from the streets, young men from the squares.


Say to the house of Israel, “This is what the Lord God says: I am about to desecrate my sanctuary, the pride of your power, the delight of your eyes, and the desire of your heart. Also, the sons and daughters you left behind will fall by the sword.


‘As for you, son of man, know that on that day I will take from them their stronghold #– #their pride and joy, the delight of their eyes, and the longing of their hearts #– #as well as their sons and daughters.


I will cause people, my people Israel, to walk on you; they will possess you,  and you will be their inheritance. You will no longer deprive them of their children.


Do not be like your ancestors;  the earlier prophets proclaimed to them:  This is what the Lord of Armies says: Turn from your evil ways and your evil deeds.  But they did not listen or pay attention to me #– #this is the Lord’s declaration.


His winnowing shovel is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing-floor and gather his wheat into the barn. But the chaff he will burn with fire that never goes out.’


Your offspring will be cursed, and your land’s produce, the young of your herds, and the newborn of your flocks.


Your sons and daughters will be given to another people, while your eyes grow weary looking for them every day. But you will be powerless to do anything.


You will father sons and daughters, but they will not remain yours, because they will be taken prisoner.
