Oh sinful nation, people weighed down with iniquity, brood of evildoers, depraved children! They have abandoned  the  Lord; they have despised  the Holy One of Israel; they have turned their backs on him.


The word of the  Lord will come to them: ‘Law after law, law after law, line after line, line after line, a little here, a little there,’ so they go stumbling backwards, to be broken, trapped, and captured.


Egyptians are men, not God; their horses are flesh, not spirit. When the Lord raises his hand to strike, the helper will stumble and the one who is helped will fall; both will perish together.


‘I will pronounce my judgements against them for all the evil they did when they abandoned me to burn incense to other gods and to worship the works of their own hands.


I will smash them against each other, fathers and sons alike #– #this is the Lord’s declaration. I will allow no mercy, pity, or compassion to keep me from destroying them.” ’


For my people have committed a double evil: They have abandoned me, the fountain of living water, and dug cisterns for themselves #– # cracked cisterns that cannot hold water.


Have you not brought this on yourself by abandoning the  Lord your God while he was leading you along the way?


Your own evil will discipline you; your own apostasies will reprimand you. Recognise  how evil and bitter  it is for you to abandon the  Lord your God and to have no fear of me. This is the declaration of the Lord God of Armies.


I say, ‘I won’t mention him or speak any longer in his name.’ But his message becomes a fire burning in my heart, shut up in my bones. I become tired of holding it in, and I cannot prevail.


The Lord can no longer bear your evil deeds and the detestable acts you have committed,  so your land has become a waste, a desolation, and an example for cursing, without inhabitant, as you see today.


But I am full of the  Lord’s wrath; I am tired of holding it back. Pour it out on the children in the street, on the gathering of young men as well. For both husband and wife will be captured, the old with the very old.


Their houses will be turned over to others, their fields and wives as well, for I will stretch out my hand against the inhabitants of the land. This is the  Lord’s declaration.


Listen, earth! I am about to bring disaster on these people, the fruit of their own plotting, for they have paid no attention to my words. They have rejected my instruction.


‘As for you, do not pray for these people.  Do not offer a cry or a prayer on their behalf, and do not beg me,  for I will not listen to you.


Yet they didn’t listen or pay attention,  but followed their own advice and their own stubborn, evil heart. They went backwards and not forwards.


Why have these people turned away? Why is Jerusalem always turning away? They take hold of deceit; they refuse to return.


The wise will be put to shame; they will be dismayed and snared. They have rejected the word of the  Lord, so what wisdom do they really have?


‘ “But if the prophet is deceived and speaks a message, it was I, the Lord, who deceived that prophet.  I will stretch out my hand against him and destroy him from among my people Israel.


therefore I am about to stretch out my hand against you  and give you as plunder to the nations. I will cut you off from the peoples and eliminate you from the countries. I will destroy you, and you will know that I am the Lord.


Say to it, “This is what the Lord God says: Look! I am against you, Mount Seir. I will stretch out my hand against you and make you a desolate waste.


My people are bent on turning from me. Though they call to him on high, he will not exalt them at all.


I will ransom them from the power of Sheol. I will redeem  them from death. Death, where are your barbs? Sheol, where is your sting? Compassion is hidden from my eyes.


For Israel is as obstinate as a stubborn cow. Can the Lord now shepherd them like a lamb in an open meadow?


I will stretch out my hand  against Judah and against all the residents of Jerusalem. I will cut off every vestige of Baal from this place, the names of the pagan priests along with the priests;


But they refused to pay attention  and turned a stubborn shoulder; they closed their ears so they could not hear.
