During David’s reign there was a famine for three successive years, so David enquired  of the Lord. The Lord answered, ‘It is due to Saul and to his bloody family, because he killed the Gibeonites.’


let seven of his male descendants be handed over to us so we may hang  them in the presence of the Lord   at Gibeah of Saul,  the Lord’s chosen.’ The king answered, ‘I will hand them over.’


He replied, ‘I have been very zealous  for the Lord God of Armies, but the Israelites have abandoned your covenant,  torn down your altars,  and killed your prophets  with the sword. I alone am left,  and they are looking for me to take my life.’


‘Have you seen how Ahab has humbled himself before me? I will not bring the disaster during his lifetime,  because he has humbled himself before me. I will bring the disaster on his house during his son’s lifetime.’


The Lord made a covenant with Jacob’s descendants and commanded them, ‘Do not fear other gods; do not bow in worship to them;  do not serve them; do not sacrifice to them.


They feared the Lord but also served their idols. Still today, their children and grandchildren continue doing as their ancestors did.


In spite of all that, the Lord did not turn from the fury of his intense burning anger, which burned against Judah because of all the affronts with which Manasseh had angered him.


However, in a particular matter may the Lord pardon your servant: When my master, the king of Aram, goes into the temple of Rimmon to bow in worship while he is leaning on my arm,  , and I have to bow in the temple of Rimmon #– #when I bow  in the temple of Rimmon, may the Lord pardon your servant in this matter.’


Therefore, Naaman’s skin disease will cling to you and your descendants for ever.’ So Gehazi went out from his presence diseased, resembling snow.  ,


After Amaziah came from the attack on the Edomites, he brought the gods of the Seirites and set them up as his gods. He worshipped before them and burned incense to them.


However, if you turn away and abandon my statutes and my commands that I have set before you and if you go and serve other gods and bow in worship to them,


God reserves a person’s punishment for his children. Let God repay the person himself, so that he may know it.


His children are far from safety. They are crushed at the city gate, with no one to rescue them.


Do not bow in worship to their gods, and do not serve them. Do not imitate their practices. Instead, demolish them  and smash their sacred pillars to pieces.


Because the Lord is jealous  for his reputation, you are never to bow down to another god.  He is a jealous God.


but the one who misses me  harms himself; all who hate me love death.’


A person can use it for fuel. He takes some of it and warms himself; also he kindles a fire and bakes bread; he even makes it into a god and worships it; he makes an idol from it and bows down to it.


No one comes to his senses; no one has the perception or insight to say, ‘I burned half of it in the fire, I also baked bread on its coals, I roasted meat and ate. Should I make something detestable  with the rest of it? Should I bow down to a block of wood? ’


Therefore, I will bring a case against you again. This is the  Lord’s declaration. I will bring a case against your children’s children.


You show faithful love to thousands but lay the fathers’ iniquity on their sons’ laps after them,  great and mighty God  whose name is the Lord of Armies,


But you may ask, “Why doesn’t the son suffer punishment for the father’s iniquity? ”  Since the son has done what is just and right, carefully observing all my statutes, he will certainly live.


‘What do you mean by using this proverb concerning the land of Israel: “The fathers eat sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge”?


I also said to them, ‘Throw away, each of you, the abhorrent things that you prize,  and do not defile yourselves with the idols of Egypt.  I am the Lord your God.’


‘So this is what the Lord God says: Now I will restore the fortunes of Jacob  and have compassion on the whole house of Israel,  and I will be jealous for my holy name.


He stretched out what appeared to be a hand and took me by the hair of my head. Then the Spirit lifted me up between earth and heaven and carried me in visions of God  to Jerusalem, to the entrance of the inner gate that faces north, where the offensive statue that provokes jealousy  was located.


The Lord handed King Jehoiakim of Judah over to him, along with some of the vessels from the house of God.  Nebuchadnezzar carried them to the land of Babylon,  , to the house of his god,  and put the vessels in the treasury of his god.

‘Do not make worthless idols for yourselves,  set up a carved image or sacred pillar for yourselves, or place a sculpted stone in your land to bow down to it, for I am the Lord your God.


You will eat the flesh of your sons; you will eat the flesh of your daughters.


The Lord is a jealous and avenging God; the Lord takes vengeance and is fierce in   wrath. The Lord takes vengeance against his foes; he is furious with his enemies.


The Lord is slow to anger and abounding in faithful love,  forgiving iniquity and rebellion.  But he will not leave the guilty unpunished,  bringing the consequences of the fathers’ iniquity on the children to the third and fourth generation.


Your children will be shepherds in the wilderness for forty years and bear the penalty for your acts of unfaithfulness until all your corpses lie scattered in the wilderness.


‘Phinehas son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, has turned back my wrath from the Israelites because he was zealous among them with my zeal,  , so that I did not destroy the Israelites in my zeal.


And he said to him, ‘I will give you all these things if you will fall down and worship me.’


‘If the world hates   you, understand that it hated me before it hated you.


The world cannot hate   you, but it does hate me because I testify about it #– #that its works are evil.


His disciples asked him, ‘Rabbi,  who sinned, this man  or his parents,  that he was born blind? ’


slanderers, God-haters, arrogant, proud, boastful,  inventors of evil, disobedient to parents,


The mindset of the flesh is hostile  to God because it does not submit to God’s law. Indeed, it is unable to do so.


Or are we provoking the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than he?


They have provoked my jealousy with what is not a god; they have enraged me with their worthless idols. So I will provoke their jealousy with what is not a people; I will enrage them with a foolish nation.


when I sharpen my flashing sword, and my hand takes hold of judgement, I will take vengeance on my adversaries and repay those who hate me.


For the Lord your God is a consuming fire,  a jealous God.


but showing faithful love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commands.


Do not bow in worship to them, and do not serve them, because I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, bringing the consequences of the fathers’ iniquity on the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate me,


for the Lord your God, who is among you, is a jealous God.  Otherwise, the Lord your God will become angry with you and obliterate you from the face of the earth.


But he directly pays back  and destroys those who hate him.  He will not hesitate to pay back directly  the one who hates him.


You adulterous people!  Don’t you know that friendship with the world is hostility towards God? So whoever wants to be the friend of the world becomes the enemy of God.


If you break the covenant of the Lord your God, which he commanded you, and go and serve other gods, and bow in worship to them, the Lord’s anger will burn against you, and you will quickly disappear from this good land he has given you.’


and so that you do not associate with these nations remaining among you. Do not call on the names of their gods or make an oath to them;  do not serve them or bow in worship to them.


But Joshua told the people, ‘You will not be able to worship the Lord, because he is a holy God. He is a jealous God;  he will not forgive your transgressions and sins.


Whenever the judge died, the Israelites would act even more corruptly  than their ancestors, following other gods to serve them and bow in worship to them. They did not turn from their evil practices or their obstinate  ways.
