For I have chosen  him so that he will command his children and his house after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing what is right and just. This is how the Lord will fulfil to Abraham what he promised him.’


Will they not teach you and tell you and speak from their understanding?


The lips of the righteous feed many, but fools die for lack of sense.


The tongue of the wise makes knowledge attractive, but the mouth of fools blurts out foolishness.


The lips of the wise broadcast knowledge, but not so the heart of fools.


When you walk here and there, they will guide you; when you lie down, they will watch over you; when you wake up, they will talk to you.


The living, only the living can thank you, as I do today; a father will make your faithfulness known to children.


At that time those who feared the Lord spoke to one another. The Lord took notice and listened. So a book of remembrance  was written before him for those who feared the Lord and had high regard for his name.


A good person produces good things from his storeroom of good, and an evil person produces evil things from his storeroom of evil.


A good person produces good out of the good stored up in his heart. An evil person produces evil out of the evil stored up in his heart, for his mouth speaks from the overflow of the heart.


No foul language should come from your mouth, but only what is good for building up someone in need,  so that it gives grace to those who hear.


Fathers, don’t stir up anger  in your children, but bring them up in the training  and instruction of the Lord.


Teach them to your children,  talking about them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.


Do this so that you may fear  the Lord your God  all the days of your life  by keeping all his statutes and commands I am giving you, your son, and your grandson, and so that you may have a long life.


Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt,  so that you may know how you should answer each person.


but in your hearts regard  Christ  the Lord as holy, ready at any time to give a defence to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you.


May the Lord reward you for what you have done,  and may you receive a full reward from the Lord God of Israel, under whose wings you have come for refuge.’


Later, when Boaz arrived from Bethlehem, he said to the harvesters, ‘The Lord be with you.’ ‘The Lord bless you,’  they replied.


All the people who were at the city gate, including the elders, said, ‘We are witnesses. May the Lord make the woman who is entering your house like Rachel and Leah,  who together built the house of Israel. May you be powerful in Ephrathah and your name well known in Bethlehem.
