and I will have you swear by the Lord, God of heaven and God of earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites among whom I live,


Instead fear the Lord, who brought you up from the land of Egypt with great power  and an outstretched arm.  You are to bow down to him, and you are to sacrifice to him.


Do not misuse the name of the Lord your God, because the Lord will not leave anyone unpunished who misuses his name.


Serve the Lord your God, and he  will bless your bread and your water. I will remove illnesses from you.


By myself I have sworn; truth has gone from my mouth, a word that will not be revoked: Every knee will bow  to me, every tongue will swear allegiance.


‘Listen to this, house of Jacob – those who are called by the name Israel and have descended from   Judah, who swear by the name of the  Lord and declare the God of Israel, but not in truth or righteousness.


Whoever asks for a blessing in the land will ask for a blessing by the God of truth, and whoever swears in the land will swear by the God of truth. For the former troubles will be forgotten and hidden from my sight.


If they will diligently learn the ways of my people   #– #to swear by my name, “As the Lord lives,” just as they taught my people to swear by Baal #– #they will be built up among my people.


then you can swear, ‘As the  Lord  lives,’ in truth,  justice, and righteousness, and then the nations will be blessed  by him and will boast in him.


When they say, ‘As the  Lord  lives,’ they are swearing falsely.


Why should I forgive you? Your children have abandoned me and sworn by those who are not gods. I satisfied their needs, yet they committed adultery; they gashed themselves  at the   prostitute’s house.


Do not swear falsely by my name, profaning the name of your God;  I am the Lord.


Then Jesus told him, ‘Go away,   Satan! For it is written: Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.’   ,


‘Again, you have heard that it was said to our ancestors, You must not break your oath, but you must keep your oaths to the Lord.   ,


And Jesus answered him,  ‘It is written: Worship the Lord your God, and serve   him only.’


‘And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God ask of you except to fear  the Lord your God by walking in all his ways, to love him, and to worship the Lord your God with all your heart and all your soul?


You are to fear the Lord your God and worship him. Remain faithful  to him and take oaths in his name.


You must follow the Lord your God and fear him. You must keep his commands and listen to him; you must worship him and remain faithful  to him.


That prophet or dreamer must be put to death,  because he has urged rebellion against the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt and redeemed you from the place of slavery,  to turn you from the way the Lord your God has commanded you to walk. You must purge the evil from you.


Do not misuse the name  of the Lord your God, because the Lord will not leave anyone unpunished who misuses his name.


If only they had such a heart to fear me and keep all my commands always, so that they and their children would prosper for ever.


Do this so that you may fear  the Lord your God  all the days of your life  by keeping all his statutes and commands I am giving you, your son, and your grandson, and so that you may have a long life.


Now please swear to me by the Lord that you will also show kindness to my father’s family, because I showed kindness to you.  Give me a sure sign


and so that you do not associate with these nations remaining among you. Do not call on the names of their gods or make an oath to them;  do not serve them or bow in worship to them.


‘Therefore, fear the Lord and worship him in sincerity and truth.  Get rid of the gods your ancestors worshipped  beyond the River Euphrates and in Egypt, and worship the Lord.


But David said, ‘Your father certainly knows that I have found favour with you. He has said, “Jonathan must not know of this, or else he will be grieved.” ’ David also swore, ‘As surely as the Lord lives and as you yourself live, there is but a step between me and death.’


Samuel told them, ‘If you  are returning to the Lord   with all your heart,  get rid of the foreign gods  and the Ashtoreths that are among you, set your hearts on the Lord, and worship only him.  Then he will rescue you from the Philistines.’
