The woman whose son was alive spoke to the king because she felt great compassion  , for her son. ‘My lord, give her the living baby,’ she said, ‘but please don’t have him killed! ’ But the other one said, ‘He will not be mine or yours. Cut him in two! ’


‘Can a woman forget her nursing child, or lack compassion for the child of her womb? Even if these forget, yet I will not forget you.


As a mother comforts her son, so I will comfort you, and you will be comforted in Jerusalem.


The hands of compassionate women have cooked their own children; they became their food during the destruction of my dear people.


‘And if in spite of this you do not obey me but act with hostility towards me,


You will eat the flesh of your sons; you will eat the flesh of your daughters.


They will besiege you within all your city gates until your high and fortified walls, that you trust in, come down throughout your land. They will besiege you within all your city gates throughout the land the Lord your God has given you.


‘You will eat your offspring,  the flesh of your sons and daughters the Lord your God has given you  during the siege and hardship your enemy imposes on you.


the afterbirth that comes out from between her legs and the children she bears, because she will secretly eat them for lack of anything else during the siege and hardship your enemy imposes on you within your city gates.
