Even while Saul was king over us, you were the one who led us out to battle and brought us back.  The Lord also said to you, “You will shepherd my people Israel, and you will be ruler over Israel.” ’


but now your reign will not endure.  The Lord has found a man after his own heart,  , and the Lord has appointed him as ruler over his people, because you have not done what the Lord commanded.’


Samuel said to him, ‘The Lord has torn the kingship of Israel away from you today  and has given it to your neighbour who is better than you.


saying, ‘Don’t be afraid, for my father Saul will never lay a hand on you. You yourself will be king over Israel,  and I’ll be your second-in-command. Even my father Saul knows it is true.’


Therefore swear to me by the Lord that you will not cut off my descendants or wipe out my name from my father’s family.’


there will not be remorse or a troubled conscience for my lord because of needless bloodshed or my lord’s revenge. And when the Lord does good things for my lord, may you remember me your servant.’
