for the message that he cried out by the word of the Lord against the altar in Bethel  and against all the shrines of the high places  in the cities of Samaria  is certain to happen.’


Josiah was eight years old  when he became king, and he reigned for thirty-one years in Jerusalem.


In the eighth year of his reign, while he was still a youth, Josiah began to seek the God of his ancestor David,  and in the twelfth year he began to cleanse Judah and Jerusalem of the high places, the Asherah poles, the carved images,  and the cast images.


Listen, heavens, and pay attention, earth, for the Lord has spoken: ‘I have raised children  and brought them up, but they have rebelled against me.


The past events have indeed happened. Now I declare new events; I announce them to you before they occur.’


I declare the end from the beginning, and from long ago what is not yet done, saying: my plan will take place, and I will do all my will.


‘Cry out loudly, don’t hold back! Raise your voice like a ram’s horn. Tell my people their transgression and the house of Jacob their sins.


The word of the Lord came to him in the thirteenth year of the reign of Josiah  son of Amon, king of Judah.


Earth, earth, earth, hear the word of the  Lord!


‘Son of man, prophesy to the mountains of Israel and say, “Mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord.


therefore, mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord God. This is what the Lord God says to the mountains and hills, to the ravines and valleys, to the desolate ruins and abandoned cities, which have become plunder  and a mockery to the rest of the nations all around.


I will turn you around, put hooks in your jaws,  and bring you out with all your army, including horses and riders,  who are all splendidly dressed, a huge assembly armed with large and small shields, all of them brandishing swords.


He answered, ‘I tell you, if they were to keep silent, the stones would cry out.’


Pay attention, heavens, and I will speak; listen, earth, to the words from my mouth.
