When the king heard the message that the man of God had cried out against the altar at Bethel, Jeroboam stretched out his hand from the altar and said, ‘Arrest him! ’ But the hand he stretched out against him withered, and he could not pull it back to himself.


Hezekiah had asked Isaiah, ‘What is the sign  that the Lord will heal me and that I will go up to the Lord’s temple on the third day? ’


Moses answered, ‘What if they won’t believe me and will not obey me but say, “The Lord did not appear  to you”? ’


So Moses and Aaron went in to Pharaoh and did just as the Lord had commanded. Aaron threw down his staff before Pharaoh and his officials, and it became a serpent.


And Hezekiah had asked, ‘What is the sign that I will go up to the Lord’s temple? ’


This will be a sign to you” #– #this is the Lord’s declaration #– #“that I will punish you in this place, so that you may know that my words of disaster concerning you will certainly come to pass.


So the Jews replied to him, ‘What sign will you show us for doing these things? ’


For the Jews ask for signs  and the Greeks seek wisdom,


Then he said to him, ‘If I have found favour with you,  give me a sign  that you are speaking with me.


This will be the sign that will come to you concerning your two sons Hophni and Phinehas:  both of them will die on the same day.
