² H6430And the PhilistinesH6186put themselves in array[H8799] H7125against[H8800] H3478IsraelH5203: and when they joined[H8799] H4421battleH3478, IsraelH5062was smitten[H8735] H6440beforeH6430the PhilistinesH5221: and they slew[H8686] H4634of the armyH7704in the fieldH702about fourH505thousandH376men.

³ H5971And when the peopleH935were come[H8799] H4264into the campH2205, the eldersH3478of IsraelH559said[H8799] H3068, Wherefore hath the LORDH5062smitten[H8804] H3117us to dayH6440beforeH6430the PhilistinesH3947? Let us fetch[H8799] H727the arkH1285of the covenantH3068of the LORDH7887out of ShilohH935unto us, that, when it cometh[H8799] H7130amongH3467us, it may save[H8686] H3709us out of the handH341of our enemies[H8802] .

⁴ H5971So the peopleH7971sent[H8799] H7887to ShilohH5375, that they might bring[H8799] H727from thence the arkH1285of the covenantH3068of the LORDH6635of hostsH3427, which dwelleth[H8802] H3742between the cherubimsH8147: and the twoH1121sonsH5941of EliH2652, HophniH6372and PhinehasH727, were there with the arkH1285of the covenantH430of God.

⁵ H727And when the arkH1285of the covenantH3068of the LORDH935came[H8800] H4264into the campH3478, all IsraelH7321shouted[H8686] H1419with a greatH8643shoutH776, so that the earthH1949rang again[H8735] .

⁶ H6430And when the PhilistinesH8085heard[H8799] H6963the noiseH8643of the shoutH559, they said[H8799] H6963, What meaneth the noiseH1419of this greatH8643shoutH4264in the campH5680of the HebrewsH3045? And they understood[H8799] H727that the arkH3068of the LORDH935was come[H8804] H4264into the camp.

⁷ H6430And the PhilistinesH3372were afraid[H8799] H559, for they said[H8804] H430, GodH935is come[H8804] H4264into the campH559. And they said[H8799] H188, WoeH865unto us! for there hath not been such a thing heretoforeH8032 .

⁸ H188WoeH5337unto us! who shall deliver[H8686] H3027us out of the handH117of these mightyH430GodsH430? these are the GodsH5221that smote[H8688] H4714the EgyptiansH4347with all the plaguesH4057in the wilderness.

⁹ H2388Be strong[H8690] H1961, and quit[H8798] H582yourselves like menH6430, O ye PhilistinesH5647, that ye be not servants[H8799] H5680unto the HebrewsH5647, as they have been[H8804] H1961to you: quit[H8804] H582yourselves like menH3898, and fight[H8738] .

¹⁰ H6430And the PhilistinesH3898fought[H8735] H3478, and IsraelH5062was smitten[H8735] H5127, and they fled[H8799] H376every manH168into his tentH3966: and there was a veryH1419greatH4347slaughterH5307; for there fell[H8799] H3478of IsraelH7970thirtyH505thousandH7273footmen.

¹¹ H727And the arkH430of GodH3947was taken[H8738] H8147; and the twoH1121sonsH5941of EliH2652, HophniH6372and PhinehasH4191, were slain[H8804] .

¹² H7323And there ran[H8799] H376a manH1144of BenjaminH4634out of the armyH935, and came[H8799] H7887to ShilohH3117the same dayH4055with his clothesH7167rent[H8803] H127, and with earthH7218upon his head.

¹³ H935And when he came[H8799] H5941, lo, EliH3427sat[H8802] H3678upon a seatH1870by the waysideH3027 [H8675] H3197 H6822watching[H8764] H3820: for his heartH2730trembledH727for the arkH430of GodH376. And when the manH935came[H8802] H5892into the cityH5046, and told[H8687] H5892it, all the cityH2199cried out[H8799] .

¹⁴ H5941And when EliH8085heard[H8799] H6963the noiseH6818of the cryingH559, he said[H8799] H6963, What meaneth the noiseH1995of this tumultH376? And the manH935came[H8799] H4116in hastily[H8765] H5046, and told[H8686] H5941Eli.

¹⁵ H5941Now EliH8673was ninetyH8083and eightH8141yearsH1121oldH5869; and his eyesH6965were dim[H8804] H3201, that he could[H8804] H7200not see[H8800] .

¹⁶ H376And the manH559said[H8799] H5941unto EliH935, I am he that came[H8802] H4634out of the armyH5127, and I fled[H8804] H3117to dayH4634out of the armyH559. And he said[H8799] H1697, What is there doneH1121, my son?

¹⁷ H1319And the messenger[H8764] H6030answered[H8799] H559and said[H8799] H3478, IsraelH5127is fled[H8804] H6440beforeH6430the PhilistinesH1419, and there hath been also a greatH4046slaughterH5971among the peopleH8147, and thy twoH1121sonsH2652also, HophniH6372and PhinehasH4191, are dead[H8804] H727, and the arkH430of GodH3947is taken[H8738] .

¹⁸ H2142And it came to pass, when he made mention[H8687] H727of the arkH430of GodH5307, that he fell[H8799] H3678from off the seatH322backwardH1157byH3027the sideH8179of the gateH4665, and his neckH7665brake[H8735] H4191, and he died[H8799] H2204: for he was an old[H8804] H376manH3513, and heavy[H8804] H8199. And he had judged[H8804] H3478IsraelH705fortyH8141years.

¹⁹ H3618And his daughter in lawH6372, PhinehasH802' wifeH2030, was with childH3205, near to be delivered[H8800] H8085: and when she heard[H8799] H8052the tidingsH413thatH727the arkH430of GodH3947was taken[H8736] H2524, and that her father in lawH376and her husbandH4191were dead[H8804] H3766, she bowed[H8799] H3205herself and travailed[H8799] H6735; for her painsH2015came[H8738]  upon her.

²⁰ H6256And about the timeH4191of her death[H8800] H5324the women that stood[H8737] H1696by her said[H8762] H3372unto her, Fear[H8799] H3205not; for thou hast born[H8804] H1121a sonH6030. But she answered[H8804] H7896not, neither did she regard[H8804] H3820  it .

²¹ H7121And she named[H8799] H5288the childH350IchabodH559, saying[H8800] H3519, The gloryH1540is departed[H8804] H3478from IsraelH413: becauseH727the arkH430of GodH3947was taken[H8736] H2524, and because of her father in lawH376and her husband.
