¹ H3068And the LORDH559said[H8799] H8050unto SamuelH56, How long wilt thou mourn[H8693] H7586for SaulH3988, seeing I have rejected[H8804] H4427him from reigning[H8800] H3478over IsraelH4390? fill[H8761] H7161thine hornH8081with oilH3212, and go[H8798] H7971, I will send[H8799] H3448thee to JesseH1022the BethlehemiteH7200: for I have provided[H8804] H4428me a kingH1121among his sons.

² H8050And SamuelH559said[H8799] H3212, How can I go[H8799] H7586? if SaulH8085hear[H8804] H2026it, he will kill[H8804] H3068me. And the LORDH559said[H8799] H3947, Take[H8799] H1241an heiferH5697 H3027with theeH559, and say[H8804] H935, I am come[H8804] H2076to sacrifice[H8800] H3068to the LORD.

³ H7121And call[H8804] H3448JesseH2077to the sacrificeH3045, and I will shew[H8686] H6213thee what thou shalt do[H8799] H4886: and thou shalt anoint[H8804] H559unto me him whom I name[H8799]  unto thee.

⁴ H8050And SamuelH6213did[H8799] H3068that which the LORDH1696spake[H8765] H935, and came[H8799] H1035to BethlehemH2205. And the eldersH5892of the townH2729trembled[H8799] H7125at his coming[H8800] H559, and said[H8799] H935, Comest[H8800] H7965thou peaceably?

⁵ H559And he said[H8799] H7965, PeaceablyH935: I am come[H8804] H2076to sacrifice[H8800] H3068unto the LORDH6942: sanctify[H8690] H935yourselves, and come[H8804] H2077with me to the sacrificeH6942. And he sanctified[H8762] H3448JesseH1121and his sonsH7121, and called[H8799] H2077them to the sacrifice.

⁶ H935And it came to pass, when they were come[H8800] H7200, that he looked[H8799] H446on EliabH559, and said[H8799] H3068, Surely the LORD'SH4899anointed is before him.

⁷ H3068But the LORDH559said[H8799] H8050unto SamuelH5027, Look[H8686] H4758not on his countenanceH1364, or on the heightH6967of his statureH3988; because I have refused[H8804] H120him: for the LORD seeth not as manH7200seeth[H8799] H120; for manH7200looketh[H8799] H5869on the outward appearanceH3068, but the LORDH7200looketh[H8799] H3824on the heart.

⁸ H3448Then JesseH7121called[H8799] H41AbinadabH5674, and made him pass[H8686] H6440beforeH8050SamuelH559. And he said[H8799] H3068, Neither hath the LORDH977chosen[H8804]  this.

¹⁰ H3448Again, JesseH7651made sevenH1121of his sonsH5674to pass[H8686] H6440beforeH8050SamuelH8050. And SamuelH559said[H8799] H3448unto JesseH3068, The LORDH977hath not chosen[H8804]  these.

¹¹ H8050And SamuelH559said[H8799] H3448unto JesseH8552, Are here all[H8804] H5288thy childrenH559? And he said[H8799] H7604, There remaineth[H8804] H6996yet the youngestH7462, and, behold, he keepeth[H8802] H6629the sheepH8050. And SamuelH559said[H8799] H3448unto JesseH7971, Send[H8798] H3947and fetch[H8798] H5437him: for we will not sit down[H8799] H935till he come[H8800] H6311hither.

¹² H7971And he sent[H8799] H935, and brought him in[H8686] H132. Now he was ruddyH5973, and withalH3303of a beautifulH5869countenanceH2896, and goodlyH7210to look toH3068. And the LORDH559said[H8799] H6965, Arise[H8798] H4886, anoint[H8798]  him: for this is he.

¹³ H8050Then SamuelH3947took[H8799] H7161the hornH8081of oilH4886, and anointed[H8799] H7130him in the midstH251of his brethrenH7307: and the SpiritH3068of the LORDH6743came[H8799] H1732upon DavidH3117from that dayH4605forwardH8050. So SamuelH6965rose up[H8799] H3212, and went[H8799] H7414to Ramah.

¹⁴ H7307But the SpiritH3068of the LORDH5493departed[H8804] H7586from SaulH7451, and an evilH7307spiritH3068from the LORDH1204troubled[H8765]  him.

¹⁵ H7586And Saul'sH5650servantsH559said[H8799] H7451unto him, Behold now, an evilH7307spiritH430from GodH1204troubleth[H8764]  thee.

¹⁶ H113Let our lordH559now command[H8799] H5650thy servantsH6440, which are beforeH1245thee, to seek out[H8762] H376a manH3045, who is a cunning[H8802] H5059player[H8764] H3658on an harpH7451: and it shall come to pass, when the evilH7307spiritH430from GodH5059is upon thee, that he shall play[H8765] H3027with his handH2895, and thou shalt be well[H8804] .

¹⁷ H7586And SaulH559said[H8799] H5650unto his servantsH7200, Provide[H8798] H376me now a manH5059that can play[H8763] H3190well[H8688] H935, and bring[H8689]  him to me.

¹⁸ H6030Then answered[H8799] H259oneH5288of the servantsH559, and said[H8799] H7200, Behold, I have seen[H8804] H1121a sonH3448of JesseH1022the BethlehemiteH3045, that is cunning[H8802] H5059in playing[H8763] H1368, and a mightyH2428valiant manH376, and a manH4421of warH995, and prudent[H8737] H1697in mattersH8389, and a comelyH376personH3068, and the LORD is with him.

¹⁹ H7586Wherefore SaulH7971sent[H8799] H4397messengersH3448unto JesseH559, and said[H8799] H7971, Send[H8798] H1732me DavidH1121thy sonH6629, which is with the sheep.

²⁰ H3448And JesseH3947took[H8799] H2543an assH3899laden with breadH4997, and a bottleH3196of wineH259, and aH1423kidH5795 H7971, and sent[H8799] H3027them byH1732DavidH1121his sonH7586unto Saul.

²¹ H1732And DavidH935came[H8799] H7586to SaulH5975, and stood[H8799] H6440beforeH157him: and he loved[H8799] H3966him greatlyH5375; and he became his armourbearer[H8802] H3627 .

²² H7586And SaulH7971sent[H8799] H3448to JesseH559, saying[H8800] H1732, Let DavidH5975, I pray thee, stand[H8799] H6440beforeH4672me; for he hath found[H8804] H2580favourH5869in my sight.

²³ H7307And it came to pass, when the evil spiritH430from GodH7586was upon SaulH1732, that DavidH3947took[H8804] H3658an harpH5059, and played[H8765] H3027with his handH7586: so SaulH7304was refreshed[H8804] H2895, and was well[H8804] H7451, and the evilH7307spiritH5493departed[H8804]  from him.
