Let him not trust in emptiness, deceiving himself; for emptiness will be his recompense.


You who tear yourself in your anger, shall the earth be forsaken for you, or the rock be removed out of its place?


If you have anything to say, answer me; speak, for I desire to justify you.


Answer me, if you can; set your words in order before me; take your stand.


For according to the work of a man he will requite him, and according to his ways he will make it befall him.


Men of understanding will say to me, and the wise man who hears me will say:


Who has given to me, that I should repay him? Whatever is under the whole heaven is mine.


Behold, he snatches away; who can hinder him? Who will say to him, ‘What doest thou?’


Whatever the Lord pleases he does, in heaven and on earth, in the seas and all deeps.


These things you have done and I have been silent; you thought that I was one like yourself. But now I rebuke you, and lay the charge before you.


If the righteous is requited on earth, how much more the wicked and the sinner!


“Woe to him who strives with his Maker, an earthen vessel with the potter! Does the clay say to him who fashions it, ‘What are you making?’ or ‘Your work has no handles’?


“And if they refuse to accept the cup from your hand to drink, then you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts: You must drink!


“Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid?”


But who are you, a man, to answer back to God? Will what is molded say to its molder, “Why have you made me thus?”


He considered abuse suffered for the Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he looked to the reward.
