Then the Lord appeared to Abram, and said, “To your descendants I will give this land.” So he built there an altar to the Lord, who had appeared to him.


Thence he removed to the mountain on the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east; and there he built an altar to the Lord and called on the name of the Lord.


Jacob left Beer-sheba, and went toward Haran.


And behold, the Lord stood above it and said, “I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and to your descendants;


And he was afraid, and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.”


He called the name of that place Bethel; but the name of the city was Luz at the first.


and this stone, which I have set up for a pillar, shall be God's house; and of all that thou givest me I will give the tenth to thee.”


Then Jacob went on his journey, and came to the land of the people of the east.


I am the God of Bethel, where you anointed a pillar and made a vow to me. Now arise, go forth from this land, and return to the land of your birth.’ ”


God said to Jacob, “Arise, go up to Bethel, and dwell there; and make there an altar to the God who appeared to you when you fled from your brother Esau.”


So Jacob called the name of the place where God had spoken with him, Bethel.


then let us arise and go up to Bethel, that I may make there an altar to the God who answered me in the day of my distress and has been with me wherever I have gone.”


And Moses built an altar and called the name of it, The Lord is my banner,
